So I wake up this morning and everytime i try to open IE i get this error message

0xc0000005. IE. wont open and a thing pops up saying Internet explorer has stopped working.

it was working fine last night! I think my email is still working (outlook express) but getting on AIM is touchy too..

my roomate is having no problems w/ his internet, and i already tried disconnecting and stuff and reconnecting.

what the hell is going on thanks.

Did some searching. I found this command prompt thing "Netsh Winsock Reset"

that seems to have fixed it though I am not sure.. Can you guys help me get more info on what mayhave gone wrong? and what exactly this Netsh Winsock thing did my computer? was that safe? any side effects.

I'd also really like to find out what happened in the first place? I dont think I have a virus/spyware just did nod32 scan and windows defender and it came up blank.

any insight would be greatly appreciated

I didnt read it as a common problem? That looked like its serious **** and was affecting XP. i have vista 64bit
Why did netsh winsock reset work and stuff. I know technically now i fixed it, but I would like more info on what i did and what happened and why, the info u posted seems to be for XP issues long ago.

So what have you done? If nothing, then it's a bug. It may happen sometimes. Completely understandable with Microsoft.

I did a command line netsh winsock reset that fixed it. i did a virus and spyware scan nothing came up so i dont think it was caused by a virus/malware ect....

so u think it was just a little glitch that caused the issue? I just dont want it to happen again if i can avoid it.

Probably so. What did you do before getting the problem?

I Googled "netsh winsock reset" and came up with hundreds of pages that looked quite informative.

    Alright so get this.
I went and did a registry optimization, and now i have this file called NTuser.dat in my C:Users>Myname folder...

    whats the deal with that?

    You need it.
It is your HKEY_LOCAL_USER section of the registry.

OK, then don't optimize the registry anymore, as it's of no use.

    It's always there.
Did you change the settings to view system files?

Because that's where Grandma MS, in her infinite wisdom, decided to place that part of your registry hive files. Delete it, and you'll probably irrecoverably kill your current installation. If it bothers you too much, re-hide system files.

As to why the netsh bit fixed your problems - since that commandline restores certain registry keys, it sounds like whatever you might have done (registry "optimization" for example) deleted or corrupted those keys.

Ahh...then, unfortunately, I'm as clueless as you (probably more so)(speaking of which, where's the clueless-with-foot-in-mouth smiley when you need it ;) ).

Well, at least don't do the registry cleaning again.
