So I have a Clevo p170em with a 7970m but I can't install any drivers. I used the CD that came with the laptop and no luck, it says installed but I can't find them anywhere on my laptop. No CCC, no nothing. I'm stuck using Intel's integrated graphics.
I've installed .NET 4.5, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Windows 7, I've uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers with programs like driver cleaner and still nothing. I installed Far Cry 3 just to see if it would use the main GPU and it didn't.
If I go into my control panel and try to view my devices, it lists the GPU as a generic VGA adapter and an error (10) about it not being able to start.
Has my laptop come with a broken GPU or can I fix this? I've been trying to sort this out all day and have a massive headache from this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may be looking at a DOA GPU. Did you install the driver from AMD's website?
http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx
If no go still, even with a beta driver, then it's probably RMA time.
You could try 3D chip if that wasn't included in your driver detection software attempts.

Uninstall AMD and Intel drives. Uninstall both. Uninstall AMD first. Then uninstall Intel.
Reboot
Install Intel's 9.17.10.2897.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22182
Reboot
Install AMD's 12.11 Enduro
AMD CATALYST
install AMD's 12.11 Cap 2
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/catalyst_application_profiles/AMD_Catalyst_12.11_CAP2.exe
Reboot.
Should be fine now. If that doesn't work, then maybe your GPU is faulty. -
I'll try that now, thank you!

"AMD APP SDK RuntimeFinal Status: Fail
Version of Item: 10.0.1084.4
Size: 90 Mbytes"
Off to a bad start....
EDIT: Didn't work.Have to send this back. FFS. Won't get it back before Christmas either most likely. Overclockers.co.uk are closed until New Years.... EUGH. -
Usually that error comes up when you use a registry cleaner of some type like Driver Sweeper/Fusion.
You can try installing this separately.
http://developer.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/11/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.8-Windows-64.exe -
I also couldn't find a way to uninstall the intel drivers. It's not listed in program files and I couldn't find it manually. Was hoping that overwriting them with the new ones wouldn't matter.
I'll try installing that separately and see what happens, thanks, but I've really given up all hope already.
If worst comes to worst, I'll likely call them tomorrow morning, have it sent back by the afternoon and then have to wait until after new years for them to open again and ship it back... -
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see how it goes. I'm having an issue with my 7970m in this thread.
-
Got another error message but when I click on the 'view details' bit it shows nothing wrong. Installed that and still nothing.
I didn't uninstall everything else again though beforehand. I might as well try that I guess but it's not looking good.... -

Good idea: perform a clean install. Go into Device Manager, right click on the device (if it's there), and select "Uninstall" first. -
How do I format my primary HDD though? Surely I can't do that within windows? Or will Windows 7 give me an option to perform a clean install? I chose not to save any settings on my second reinstall but some driver programs still made it over and weren't in the windows.old folder. Want to make sure that doesn't happen again....
-
When you do another install, you should have options to delete the primary drive and format it.
-
Weird, that wasn't coming up. I'll take anther crack at it. Might just go straight into Windows 8 for the hell of it....

No! I did NOT mean reformat your drive! A clean install of the driver is what I was referring to. When you re install a driver without first uninstalling the first, you're installing/copying data over the previous data. I was suggesting you do away with the current driver altogether first, THEN install an up to date driver.
Please don't tell me you reformatted your HDD...
-
The clean driver installs aren't doing anything though as they never seem to actually install to begin with. I haven't reformatted my HDD but I'm about to... There's little reason not to, it's a new computer so no information there.
Tried installing up to date drivers first time around and no luck already. Now the computer won't even accept Windows updates.... Something is very wrong. -
?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I started up my system using the F2 command to get into the set up and the VGA card is listed as a 680m?!
Is this because I installed an Nvidia driver once by accident? Or have they royally f*ed up my order and given me a better GPU? Or the wrong BIOs?
When I installed the Nvidia drivers because they were set as default on the reseller CD, the installation did say that my system was compatible... Then again, I just assumed it was referring to the intel HD 4000. Is this just because I didn't completely remove the drivers? What's going on!? -
lol That's not too bad if it goes to what I thought of now, go to NVIDIA's site and download the driver for GTX680M and see if you really got one.
-
Like, don't get me wrong, I'd be beyond ecstatic if that happened, it's just... They don't even have the option to configure this laptop with that card! How did this happen?!
I'm downloading the latest Intel HD driver now and will then download the 680m one. I've only installed the Chipset driver so far.
I'm putting both the Intel and 680m one onto an external HDD (can't use Wi-FI yet on my new PC so using my old laptop) and will then give it a shot.... Internet speeds pretty bad here so this'll take a good 10 minutes. *Fingers Crossed*. -
Well Doomsday for them if they gave you the 680M lol.
-
Still downloading that Intel driver.... Seems like it's not my internet that's slow but their servers. Man, I have no idea how they screwed this up if this is the 680m though. They do offer that but as a separate unit, not an upgrade. And it's a £500 price difference on their site :|
-
So yeah, installed that latest Nvidia driver, went into Devices and it lists my GPU as an Nvidia 680m.... Need to try out a game soon but so yeah. Looks like that happened :|
-
Santa lives congrats LOL
-
I know, right?!
So, what's the quickest way to benchmark this thing and make sure it actually works? I'm downloading the Resi 5 benchmark tool because I've used it before and it's small. All my main benchmarking games (Far Cry 3, Crysis) are a little too large and I'm impatient...
Want to make sure everything is up and running OK before I start celebrating too early... -
Wow...
Count your lucky stars...
Merry Xmas... -
Just ran the Resi 5 benchmark - average of 100FPS at1920x1080 with 8x AA and the rest maxed out.
Yeah, this is awesome. Installing Crysis now.... -
All the surprises I ever get with hardware are in the category of failing SATA-II ports on the first revisions of Intel Sandy Bridge motherboards and Enduro troubles on the 7970m... Where is my 680m
. Congratulations
-
With the 310.70 drivers (i7-3630) this is what i get with no tweaking involved
3DMark11 - P6028
3DMarkVantage - P21829 -
lol, so I was SO stressed yesterday when it looked like my laptop GPU was broken. Gave myself a headache trying to fix it. Then this morning I thought I'd check to see what was actually in here and low and behold... I can't believe my luck either.
Tried out Far Cry 3 and getting an average of 40FPS with 4x MSAA on ultra at 1920 x 1080. That's so far beyond my 285m (low settings at 1280 x 720 to get a playable 30FPS) that I just can't deal with how awesome this all is. -
No more dealing, $500 Christmas present is just beyond awesome
Help please! 7970m - can't install any drivers
