As the title reveals I have a couple of questions regarding the different versions of the 6970M

    1) Will a 6970M OEM pulled from a M18X work alright in my w860cu?

    2) Will a 6970M ES work in my w860cu?

    3) What are the physical differnces (color blue, red, green etc)

    4) Has anyone tried putting an Alienware card into a clevo?

My main concern is getting a card with limited/wrong fan control.

Which card would you guys go for?

    Thanks

Umm, I have several precautions in my mind:

    1) are you sure the heatsinks of your GTX285 can fit the 6970?
    2) According to >this< your GTX285M is 75watt and the 6970 is 100watt. You need 180W power supply, is yours 180W?
    3) the Engineering Sample cards, how stable are they? I read people dislike ES chips, be it CPUs or GPUs.

I'd just get a new configuration than upgrading a old one. But its up to you, your money....

Hi Bob, and thank you for replying ;)

Several people on this board have upgraded their w860cu/np8690 with the 6970m. Some modification of the heatsink might be necessary, but I'm aware of this.

The 6970m can run from a 120W PSU when it is coupled with a 720qm as you can see here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...0cu-np8690-owners-lounge-507.html#post7610048

As for the ES cards I really can't say how stable they are. If you read the OP I've also got a OEM card from alienware m18x in my sights, but I'm worried about the fan control (and perhaps other issues I'm not aware of). this card shouldn't have any "ES issues" though.

Anyways, it's far cheaper for me to get one of these cards for under $300 than buying a new one ;)

Well, then I'd say go for it. After all, experimenting has a nice thrilling vibe to it! And if you succeed, make sure you post your experience, I always like to read how people make things work by experimenting with them.

And if its that cheap, then even better! A new card like 6970 will boost your gaming by 2x for sure! Thumbs up.

    Someone tried and succeeded.

1.Heatsink needs modification as you already know.
2.Need a larger psu to fulfill the potential of 1120sp Barts.
3.Some ICs or FETs on the back may need heatpads.
4.W860CU/W870CU can shadow the card's vbios, changing the vendor and subsystem ID.
Don't be misguided when you see clevo/Kapok(1558) in GPU-z thinking that clevo vbios works with ES 6970m. In fact, clevo 6970m/6990m vbios can brick dell es 6970m.

ES 6970m form dell can be unlocked from 960sp to 1120sp by flashing dell oem 6970m/6990m vbios.

I went with the OEM version from a m18x. The dell version of this card can clock higher than clevo versions, and I don't think all ES cards can be unlocked like you said,.

THanks for reassureance and pics :)

The only one whose ES 6970m coudn't be unlocked to 1120sp is Tirenz as far as I know. And his two ES cards came from Eurocom.

So I assume ES 6970m from Eurocom or clevo can't be unlocked.

Those two m15x users have returned or resold their ES cards.
There is a current limit in M15x MB preventing it to get power supply higher than 150W~160W even the psu is replaced with a larger (e.g. 240W) one.
When playing both CPU and GPU heavy load games, 150W is insufficient for ES 6970m which is more power hungry than normal 6970m.

Dell version 6970m/6990m/firepro m8900 don't work in clevo P150HM/p170HM while they work in clevo W860CU/W870CU.
