My new 8170 will be arriving soon (actually back from having a screen replaced due to a dead pixel.)

I want to update to the latest drivers for the 6990m.

    Questions:

    1. Is it as simple as downloading the Catalyst package from AMD's site, uninstalling existing drivers, and installing new drivers?

    2. Do I have to use Sager drivers or can I just use everything from AMD for the 6990m?

    3. It's been forever since I updated video card drivers. Can someone give me a step-by-step on how to uninstall the existing Sager drivers and install the new AMD drivers for the 6990?

    Thanks for any help.

You can go to Sager's site and get the drivers. Once downloaded, you can either update from device manager, or uninstall and then scan for new hardware and browse to where you downloaded them. Do not go to the manufacturer, as the Sager's have their own drivers.

It looks like the Sager drivers aren't the latest (8/16/11 on Sager's site and 12/13/11 on the AMD site).

Why can't I use the drivers from the AMD site? Seems like a big negative to have to rely on Sager drivers that are 4 months older.

The AMD drivers will work fine. Some here have been running the newest 12.1 preview, but 11.11 stable is most common.

This thread will have links to all of the newest drivers you'd need:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/573379-clevo-driver-thread.html

The Clevo site will give you the recommended drivers, but most of the manufacturers drivers will work fine. To uninstall the old drivers, go to add/remove programs and remove the old ones, run the new installer. It's very simple :)

Great. So to uninstall drivers, I don't need to be in safe mode or anything? I just use add/remove programs to uninstall the existing drivers and then run the AMD Catlayst installer?

I've been reading other places that I need to run a driver cleaner program and log in as admin to be sure that I've deleted all old drivers. So this is not necessary?

If there is an "official" recommended way to update drivers, could someone please post a link to a comprehensive step-by-step "assume I don't know what I'm doing" source. I've found too many useless how-to's that go like:

    Step 1: Uninstall drivers
    Step 2: ...

    Thanks for any help.

Some people prefer to use something like Driver Sweeper to wipe out any mention of the older driver from registry files before installing a new one. However I think with the Catalyst Control Center you have a simple option to update the driver to the latest version. It will do all the work for you if I'm not mistaken.

Driver cleaning programs and the like really aren't needed unless you're having trouble. You can just uninstall the old ones and install the new ones. If you're upgrading from an old official driver to a new one, it's pretty painless.
