I'm building a laptop for my uncle and he want one that's fast enough for CAD drawings, and machining. Also dual monitor so he can watch movies on the side or whatever.

I looked around at a few resellers and found that the Satori P170HM-S1 offered the best value. The config I'm looking at is:

Display: 17.3" 1920 x 1080 FHD LED Backlit Glossy Display
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.0-2.9GHz
    Memory: (16GB) 16384MB, PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 - 4 SO-DIMM
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5
    Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300 Hybrid w/ 4GB NAND Flash
    Hard Drive 2: 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300 Hybrid w/ 4GB NAND Flash
RAID: 0 High Performance (Two Hard Drive Configuration)
Optical Drive Bay: 8X Multi DVD+/-R/RW RAM Dual-Layer Drive
    Wireless: Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 802.11A/B/G/N LAN Card
Cooling: IC Diamond 7 Thermal Compound, CPU & GPU

For 1634.00 without any discounts. This price was better than other stores by over $100.

Would this be sufficient for all the complex drawings/work that might come up while playing movies on the side and possibly other stuff?

Also since I'm from Canada, there's tax/delivery/brokerage fees which puts me slightly over the budget. Would it be possible to opt for no HD and put them in myself?

Anyone have any other suggestions that I could change to make it better/cheaper without decreasing the performance? Or anyone seen better/cheaper build somewhere else?

    Thanks!

The build seems good, but i myself would go for i7 2720qm or maybe one of the extreme editions, the L3 cache changes things so much in cad and rendering.
Bear in mind that choosing a good graphic card won't change anything on cad unless you go for Quadro series. So even a card with 500mb memory is enough.
The full hd screen is a must have! And would be better if matte

Planning to buy myself one, but these custom laptops are so ugly!

i7 2720qm isn't one of the options available, the next one that increases the cache to 8m is Intel® Core™ i7-2860QM, 8MB L3 Cache, 2.5-3.6GHz for extra 350 which would put me over the budget by a lot hah

and can't downgrade the card, so the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 is essentially the cheapest one.

The 2720QM actually has been phased out and replaced by the 2760QM. It's a really good value right now for the price/performance increase. The higher end CPU's wont give you as good of a bump from that one.

The rest of the specs look good. I would suggest getting an SSD primary HDD secondary instead of 2x 500gb in RAID. You'll get a much better performance increase.

When shipping to Canada avoid UPS ground they will have brokerage fees, UPS Express while costing more off the bat avoids brokerage fees.
