I think I have a problem with my HD on my M860. Without a cooler, it gets up to 68(!)c playing a random intensive game. I played on my desk and liftet it 2cm with two DVD covers. Now, 6 minutes of running the HD tune error test (no cooler), it reached 65c, which is max it tolerates.

With a cooler it idles at 42-46c and after some gaming it reaches 50-55 which is pretty high too.

Im afraid of damageing the HD when I dont use the cooler.

My HD is 250GB 5400rpm. I think its a seagate.

I`ve installed the latest driver and followed some of the guides to reduce the temperature.

This should be enough for my vendor to send a new HD?

Not until your HDD is officially dead.

    that is too high.
mine sets alarm bells off when it hits 60c

playing a game should kick the fans onto full and should keep the temps. between 51c - 55c

have you cleaned the fan and vents out at all.if not this could be the problem as it recommends that you do this every few months.

contact your seller and see what they say.

Thanks for reply. I have cleaned it one time for two-three monts ago and it barely had any dust in it, so I dont think thats the problem.

I`ll contact them tomorrow and see what they have to say.

lol that's a lot but let me guess you did not install intel matrix storage. By the way I had a 7200rpm wich reached 73C (spec max for most 7200 is 65C and for 5400 it's 60C I think) so I emailed eurocom and they did send me a new one without asking for proof or arguing.

There should be a sticky explaining that it is advised to install intel matrix storage during OS installation

I don't think there is a problem if you managed to install it afterward (I did) but some people were unable to install it afterward form some unknown reason so I guess it is safer to install it during OS installation

My HDD reached even higher temps than that.

I cleaned out my fans and upon reboot, the HDD temp was like 30 degrees celsius lol.

I know its not dust clogging the vent. This is the first time I played games for a extended period of time without a cooler and I have had the M860 since september.

I`ve used it a few times with the cooler off, just to check if the cooler has an impact. It definitly does.

Now I don`t want to play without a cooler, risking damageing the HD. My vendor did`nt tell me the HDtemp would go crazy while playing games. Thats valid reason to get it fixed for free in my country.

Call them and let them know. My HDD doesn't go over 55c while gaming, and this is without a cooler.

Did you get your HDD temps down yet Eivind?
You said you followed cooling guides, did you disable the Indexing Service? It helped my temps a bit. (not sure if that is just an XP thing though) :)

    :p

I have disabled the Indexing Service. But I have been quite busy with exams so I have`nt bothered doing anything about it for now. Really hate this time a year :)

I'd make a really good backup copy of your hard drive; if it keeps running temps like that it will be dead sooner rather than later, and they don't always give a lot of warning before they kick the bucket.
