I was thinking about doing the overclock on the q6600.

Did you do the one pin or the two pin ?

Will it mess up my motherboard ?

Will let be an increase in game performence ?

I downloaded rm clock to check temps. I use my np9262 all day at work the temp say 46c with fans on high... So if i overclock my machine will be on all day and at night on for 5 hours playing games...... On the task bar by the clock it says its running at 1.6 ghz. Why?

    Thanks man.

When the processor is not used it downclocks by reducing the multiplier. When more computing power is needed the multiplier goes back to its original value. You can read more about it here:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/247006-28-running-full-speed-wrong-multiplier

I hope it is ok I answered one of the questions, even if it was not for me.

    2 pins is better.

you can expect an 8 degree or more increase in temps.

I idle at 37 and peak at 67 during extreme processor intensive apps.

I also keep fans on max 24-7 with a nc1000 cooling pad.

I dont know if it will wreck your mobo or not.

    do at your own risk.

Good score. What was it before the tweak?

Did your cpu speed go to 3.0 under load?

yup, it does work with 1 pin. some say it is more stable with 2.

    but to each their own.

    nice 3dmark score.

now if you throw your voltage on each card to 1.05 and then oc it to 600-1500-950. you could prob get 16-17k

You could run CPU-Z while you're running something like WPrime and you should see the max cpu speed. I'm pretty sure your tweak did raise the clock to 3.0 though.

There may be a better way, but you could run the RivaTuner monitor while you're gaming and look at it after you quit. Some temp moniyors can keep a log file I think, but I can't remember which ones.

Would you please give us a breakdown on your 3DMark06 scores (sm2,sm3,cpu)?

dowload TAT Intel Thermal analysis tool

use that to max the cores out and wait for 10 min and see the most max temps that you get.

oh ya. the best by far in the whole world util for TEMPS that you CAN TRUST is CoreTEMP!

    download that.

it will give you accurate tcmax and tjunction temps.

also it will let you know real temps.

    kkk

72 degrees is max temp. I believe for the processor.

even though it can work until 95 degrees.

I would advise you on getting an Zalman NC1000 it's quite and drops my temps by 5-8 degrees.

also Use some Arctic Silver on the CPU if you haven't yet.

although, you really have nothing to be worried about.

these prcs have prevention measures so it wont harm it or your system.

also you should know TAT is the most HARDCORE APP TESTING FOR CPU"S!!!

so even when playing games I only get to 56-58 degrees.

and all other testing in my life on any CPU it never gets as high as TAT

They're given under your total score. They are called SM 2.0 and HDR/SM 3.0. These numbers are based on the average FPS in the four graphics sequences, and, for all practical purposes, they're the only numbers in the 3DMark06 score that tells you anything about general game performance.

Once the benchmark is done. A box appears with an orange rectangle for me to click on and it take me to a site with my score.

I know what your talking about. i've seen people take a screen shot of there score and put it up on this forum.. I have the demo so i guess it doesn't give it to me.. Just the total online

Try it again. Most of the people here have the demo version. You should be able to see the score anyway. Just look around a little more after the test. I guess you will find them. :)

After you click on the orange box and are taken to the results page, scroll down a little and you will see a blue link on the right hand side called "view more". Click on it. Scroll down on the page you're taken to, until you see "Main Test Results" where you'll find SM 2.0, HDR/SM 3.0, and CPU scores.

Anyway, if I assume you had the same CPU score as dexgo (don't know why you wouldn't) I calculate your GS score (the average of sm2 and sm3) to be about 6400, which, taking into account the 3-4% difference between XP and Vista, is about the same as what Justin reported for the dual core CPU, and much higher than what he reported for the quad.

So... it appears that dexgo's CPU tweak not only eliminated the quad's "bottleneck" for GPU overclocking, but for SLI as well!

i don't know if he posted crysis benchmarks after the cpu mod. i simply asked him if he saw any fps increase with the mod and he said he did not, just saw a more stable fps as a result.

i was surprised. i know crysis is not a quad core game but the 600mhz i figured would have netted him a 1 or 2 fps increase.

so if this mod does not increase the the fps in games is it worth the risk and a voided warranty from your vendor? besides that you would be running scared and forcing max fans 24/7 with this overclock and i personally would not want the added nose as i know my d900t's max fans sounds like a jet engine and really drowns all the ambient sounds from any room. i would bet, though, on cpu-instensive applications like cad and audio/video editing the overclock should be very noticable.

"so if this mod does not increase the the fps in games is it worth the risk and a voided warranty from your vendor? "

My guess is that the mod will increase game FPS for SLI quads, not because of the slight clock increase, but because of the increased FSB speed. The recent 3DMark06 score posted by CesOne shows that the mod greatly increased his sm2/3 scores, which should translate into improved Crysis scores as well. Hopefully he'll post his Crysis scores soon.

Whether the downsides you site are worth it or not depends on the individual. Probably many, if not most, will not do it.

Faster proceessor means more raw computing power. Games is just one use of the computer. I am sure there are others uses for it.

His warranty was anyway voided becasue he dropped it on the floor.

right, I have no warranty. and I am liberal in the things I do to it.. for furthering the scene as a whole.

I do alot of encoding on my computer and application work.

it helps a heck of a lot more now.

3dmark Frames Clearly went up I DID gain over 4fps in the 3dmark program.

The q6600 seems to be a good buy for the buck with this overclocking. Too bad it is needed to take out the proc to do it. In the tomshardware the 60 C temperature for the Tcase is considered to be hot.

dont know why ,,, before i knew that i can put the fans on high my temp on idle was at 59c and that was before the mod... spoke to someone in sager and they told me that was fine... that if i wanted to just set the fans on high.

Think about this.... before i knew about the high fan setting I was playing bioshock... Now if idle it was at 59c what do you think the temp was when i was playing bioshock. lets say an extra 5c to 8c maybe more...

Now if I never knew about this forum..... I never would have known about the fan setting and I would have been playing the whole time with my fans on normal...... so my point is would that have done any damage to my system.

Right now my temp is 44c with the mod.. playing games it goes to about 60 to 61c

That would be the same temp if not less then without the mod and the fans left on normal... which is what i would have been doing if i didn't know about the forum..

If I'm wrong please let me know ... This is just something i was thinking about

That is a GREAT score for a quad with no overclocking on the GPU, and the sm2/3 scores are higher than the dual core (E8400) scores posted by Justin!

To settle the question about those scores translating into improved gaming performance, why don't you run the Crysis benchmark at 1920x1200 high quality and let us know what you get.

Thanks for posting (and the thoughtful PM) and good luck with your terrific machine.

just let the benchmark finish. when you isntall the nvidia drivers you should enable sli mode. you should not touch ANY of the settings in the profiles as it will screw up. the sli profiles already have optimal sli settings and because of the bugs with laptop drivers, changing anything may screw it up forcing you to re-instal the drivers. AFR2 is the most common sli setting for games, btw.

in other words when you run a game the sli drivers will auto-detect it and enable the proper sli setting for you. you should enable the sli green bar to check of sli is working properly in games.
