I always want to nip these cooling issues in the bud before they become a major issue. And since I'm still kind of new to running with laptops, I'm not entirely sure if these temperatures are dangerous, or abnormal.

Using Hardware monitor the CPU idle temp is about 42 °C, and I peaked out at around 90 °C. Now I've been told that laptops in general innately run higher than desktops. It still worries me that the laptop is running so close to boiling temperature.

I've got a fairly well ventilated setup with a fan blowing away hot air away from the vents, and since it's new, I'm not too worried about dust clutter yet.

Please affirm or quell my fears since the last thing I want is heat damage to my CPU.

Those are not abnormal temperatures for the GPUat load. They're designed with a thermal shutdown of 110C. You have reason to worry if your load temps generally sit at 95C and above though. Mid 80's-90C is normal.

However, if you're saying it's your CPU and not the GPU- those are quite high temps. Check that the vents are clear and consider contacting your retailer if you can't get the temperatures down.

If you're worried about it, you can always repaste the CPU/GPU (assuming you got the stock paste) or run with max fans (FN+1).

You know I just noticed the same.

I never really watch CPU temp because never had issues with it on any systems so always just watch GPU.

My CPU idles at around 42c also and when I play BF3 it seems to go up to 91c. This is in a room that is 23.88c

I also noticed that even though the CPU temp is getting that high the CPU fan does not seem to speed up like the GPU fan does.

If I Fn+1 it speeds up and temps of course start to go down.

The Fan does work though, turns off when it gets in 40's comes up when it warms, just seems it does not spin up as high as would think compared to GPU fan when the temps get high.

Anyone else with these laptops and BF3 care to share CPU temps and room temps?

Also, I notice my PCH temp always shows 52c, is this just not monitored and a dummy value or what? It never goes up or down.

This is all on latest BIOS and EC. Laptop came with latest BIOS but I updated EC few months ago because saw a newer one was out.

    +++UPDATE+++
So I gave in and re-pasted my CPU (boy does that factory one make a mess from too much!) and first thing I noticed after cleaning off old stuff is my CPU has a few scratches in it and seems those are from the heatsink as it has a few imperfections on the part that touches CPU. They are not major and shouldn't really impact performance but anyway I cleaned it all up and put some ICD7 I had on.

My Max temps went down a few c so instead of 91c in BF3 now I see around 87-88c.

Odd part is if I run Prime95 they seem to max around 85-86c depending on the test I pick.

One thing I notice is however BF3 uses the CPU it seems to keep all the cores in turbo mode forever so I guess it's possible that is why temp is higher but still hate them being this high. I see others max out in upper 70's lower 80's but none posted BF3 Temps so maybe just different apps doing things different to cause more or less on the temps.

are you sure that's the cpu temp? my 8170 on bf 3 on high runs at around 77-78c and 83-85c for the gpu.

I'd still be concerned if your cpu is hitting 85c+

Yup I am 100% sure its the CPU temps.

GPU Max temp I have ever seen is 81c
CPU now after the re-paste seems to be hitting 87c.

I play BF3 on Ultra settings with just a few things set to High and AA on 2x.

I don't know why my CPU runs warmer. I mean I am not having any problems but am more worried about longevity of Mobo or CPU.

I wonder if having 1600MHz Ram and the faster CPU are maybe why my temps are higher than yours?

I don't really know what is considered the optimal range for heat on these mobile CPUs. Always been a desktop guy really.

I know max op temp/thermal shutoff is at 100c which I am under that of course but how far under is ideal (of course lower is always better but you know what I mean)
