Hi again,
I've had my new gpu (6990m) back for just over a week and it has been running fine. I put it in with new thermal paste (antec formula 7 diamond) and everything was running great, idling at 42-45 C. Then the other day temps were really high.. Getting into the high 50's after quitting a game and not dropping. So I restarted my laptop and they increased into the high 50's again with nothing running..?
I have made sure every little bit of dust is gone from the fans and heat sinks. I have repasted multiple times, using the pea dot method and the line method and the spreading myself method. They all result in the gpu climbing to 58 degrees whilst idle! My cooling pad does nothing to cool it. It drops about 3 degrees when I put fans on full speed.
Please don't tell me it's another faulty card..

dont panic. 50c is nothing to worry about at all. start panicking when you hit the mid 90c

yeah 50s for idle is a big high, is any other programs using the dedicated GPU? also in afterburner ,what are you seeing for the clock/memory speed during idle?

Compare readings from 2-3 programs for your temps. If they're all within a degree or two of each other, and are consistent readings, then yes: that is a bit high for idle (though it's not "dangerous" by any means).
Also: does your BIOS show similar readings? Check the voltages. -
that sure sounds like there some process in the background putting load onto ur gpu. maybe windows is trying to assess performance? check and see if theres a process called winsat.exe running in the task manager.

Wow thx for all the replies, but it seems to have fixed itself. It's down to about 45c idle now. I think it must have been getting used by some performance checker as it is a fresh install of Windows. I kept turning it off when I saw it go to 58 so it never got a chance to finish I think.
High temps brand new gpu?
