    Hi,
I am hoping to purchase an XMG U705 once the IPS panels are released hopefully sometime in March. I am going to go for the GTX 980 and 4790K cpu setup but cant decide on what configuration ssd's to go for.
I currently own 2 x Samsung 840 EVO's 256GB SATA SSD's but cant help but think the M.2 PCIe SSD's are what I should be going for.
    The spec of the laptop allows 1 x PCIe SSD and 1 x M.2 SATA III SSD. There are then 2 x slots for 1 x 7 - 9.5mm 2.5" SATA III and 1 x 7mm SATA III.
I am thinking M.2 PCIe SSD for OS and a M.2 SATA III for my games and then throw in a SATA SSD for storage etc.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

What? Ips panels are available from the start.

Wait for some worthy m.2 pcie drives to come out (unless you can get a sm951), and be prepared to pay for them. Even the m.2 sata don´t bring anything better than 2.5" drives but are slightly more expensive. Hold on unitl summer.

If your ssds are spare then there is no reason not to just use those unless you need extra space from a regular hdd.

The IPS panels aren't available for this particular laptop until mid-late March unfortunately.

I think I will use both the ssd's for games storage etc and purchase a M.2 PCIe XP941 for OS.

The speed of each will be similar.

in sequential performance yes. in small file size performance not so much. that goes for the xp941. the sm951 however is a different story :)

For now that´s true only if we´re speaking about sequential read/write speeds. So, unless you´re always transferring really big files between two pcie drives, or doing some serious 4k raw video editing (for example), they´re not really worth it.

4k (not the video format!) transfer speeds are the most important for overall snapiness. For those better wait for nvme pcie drives.

Your 840 EVOs will indeed outperform the XP941 in 4k random read (10% slower) and 4k random write (21% slower), however the sequential read and write speeds are roughly double that of the 840 EVO.

If someone is looking to have a single flash drive then the XP941 does make sense - as you would be using it for files and storage the sequential performance more than makes up for the random performance. Plus it's going to be difficult to notice the real world difference between those random 4k benchmark times unless you have two identical systems next to each other to compare directly.

On the other hand, as you already have EVOs they would make better dedicated OS drives and if you're only interested in 4k performance.

tru that, if its just about the subjective performance, basically ANY ssd will do, since u wont really feel the difference between a mainstream and a high-end drive anyways. at this point its all about the numbers :D

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think for now then I will use my 840 EVO's just to keep the price of the laptop down a bit. I can always later on down the line look at upgrading them to a M.2 SM951.

Now I just need to decide whether I need an IPS panel or not.

The availability date hasn't been confirmed yet, but we have samples to test which do show very good speeds :)

    Hi. I own XMG U705 (Clevo P771ZM) with 17.3" (43.9cm) Full-HD CHIMEI N173HGE-L11 (1920*1080) is it hard to upgrade to 17.3" (43.9cm) Full-HD LG LP173WF4-SPD1 (1920*1080) Matte IPS? And does it support Nvidia G-Sync?

    Hi

Unfortunately the answer is no on both counts; although the IPS panel we offer supports G-Sync the actual chassis is different to when we only offered the TN panel, so you can't swap panels over easilly. rom a GPU point of view it is something that has to be selected when the laptop is ordered/built and we can't retro fit the option so to speak.
