There isn't an equiv sager model, so here is the model page Horize W25B Notebook PC (not that I think it really matters).

Anyway, if I shut down 'normally', I note my computer doesn't shut down properly (the power button still glows, mouse light still on), and when I power on, it says 'resuming from hibernation' instead of a proper startup. I had a buggy install of windows 8, and assumed this may be the cause of it. however, after to a clean install, the problem still persists. I can get it to start properly by removing a power source, but obviously something is a bit more wrong here...

    Any suggestions?

That is odd espeically after a reformat. Are you "normally" shutting down by pushing the power button or telling Windows to shut down. If the button maybe its set to put the computer in hibernate.

Nope, I'm using the windows 'shut down' option. It is odd indeed..

do you ever use hibernation at all. if not delete the 2.1gb folder when you do a disc cleanup and hopefully that should sort the problem.
as i said hopefully, as i have no idea how windows 8 works

You mean the standard disk clean up (like this)? There is no 2.1gb folder :/

so it is different with windows 8 :(
no idea where it will be then.
a normal disc cleanup with xp/vista/7 has that folder show up in cleanup and its the first thing i delete on a new machine.

hopefully a windows 8 user can advise.

try running an elevated (admin) command prompt and typing "powercfg -h off" without quotes

That seems to have worked, thank you!

However, is this simply treating the symptom of another problem, or do I not need to worry?

It doesn't address why the 'shut down' button was causing the system to hibernate, but you don't have to worry about disabling hibernation (especially if you don't have much use for it).
