So I'm posting this in regards to a two going on three year old setup (specs in the sig) that I just recently reset to factory defaults. My cpu temps have been all over the place, spiking to over 93C (when starting Empire Total War) and idling in the high 40C range. My GPU has also been idling pretty high, typically mid 50C range. I know this isn't normal and I'm going to break it apart and see what I can clean out but any other thoughts would be appreciated on the CPU, that worries me especially the idle temps. Also, a chkdsk scan just found 7 bad sectors on my HD so I'm wondering if that may have been causing any issues. I'm considering replacing the HDsoo but I'd like to keep the CPU if possible. Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch guys

Clean out the heat sinks. (btw, I am mobile and can't see your sig). 40 & 50C temps are not bad, but 93C is high. The bad sectors on the hard drive would not cause over heating. They don't even mean the hard drive is going bad, as lock ups can cause them. But I would keep an eye on the hard drive, and take a look at the Smart data. Anyway, most likely you have dust stuck in the heat sink fins.

Thanks for the reply, it's an intel 2720 and yeah I'm going to blow it out tomorrow. However, I am worried about the HD, my computer has been freezing when coming out of idle (not sleep) and it's only been happening after I reinstalled windows (not clean, I needed some documents so I had to get them from windows.old and I was unable to save them because my system restores weren't working) so my guess is my problems may have been stemming from the unclean install. That's also when the hot temps started happening.

You may need to repaste the CPU.

If the problems only arose after a reinstall I would check the chipset drivers, maybe run XTU(intel xtreme tuning utility). See if the processor is staying in it's overclocked turbo boost mode. If that is the case then I would try to reinstall the INF from intel's site if that doesn't work then I would recommend a complete reinstall.

You could also check the power settings for your hdd.
