Was playing Team Fortress 2 today, and it locked up on me. I thought it was just a generic crash (which happen often) but i couldnt get out of it into Windows. A hard reset later while i was waiting for the BIOS to pop-up i contemplated looking at the CPU TEMP, and then the BIOS showed up covered in green squares with red dots.... nvm the CPU TEMP then thats GPU.

My fans didnt seem to be running max speed, and the system should have warned me id have thought before it got near a temp to crash. Anyway i just poped on CPUID to monitor the temp while playing TF2 for about 15mins...

That max temp is kinda scary, and if that was after 15mins then i can understand how it could no doubt have hit 100*c or above and thus crashed.

Thing is, WHY? It never did this before, i checked the vents, some dust, but not exactly clogged up enough to cause a fire.... and that does not explain why my fan speed seems to be not turning up unless i force it Fn+1.

The only thing ive changed since it used to work was update the BIOS from 1.0.0.7E to 1.0.0.8 and the Fan Firmware to 1.0.0.7Sh from 1.0.0.6. Bit of a coincidence... :/

It's cuz your RAM is too fast. Try running it at 133 Mhz.

    jk.

Make sure you have it sitting on a cool surface like a table or something. Also, give it a little more dust cleaning inside. My desktop gets so cluttered with dust that my GPU was overheating at one point. I took out the GPU and dissasembled and cleaned it and the temperatures dropped 15 degrees Celcius idle and under load.

So you can imagine what a laptop must be like inside.

You didn't have it on Fn +3 mode, did you?
And are both your fans in working order?

If you had it on fn+3 it stays on one speed regardless of how high the temps go. If it was on auto then something is wrong with your thermal detectors or your fan..

Hm, are you sure you didn't run the laptop in Fn+3 mode at that time?
Cause I did that once while playing Oblivion, and the graphic card reached 96 degrees...

No alarm went off? I know on the stock BIOS an alarm is suppod to ring at 90C. Its a pleasantly annoying sound. Are you running overvolted or overclocked?

alarm will not sound at 90C usually, thats only danger temp...when it hits around 95C, it would only downclock the GPU when it hits around 95C in order to cool down.

threshold temp is 100-105C degrees, which would prompt an alarm or the system to shut itself off.

No, no overclocking and the time the system shut down it was running "Auto" the second time (when that reading was taken) im pretty sure it was in HIGH (pressed Fn+1) which is why the temps are so confusing....

This has not happened before, so thats another why im confused. My notebook has always been hot, its on a glass desk and the underside of it has always been toasty when gaming -- even 'uncomfortably' hot. I just figured it was normal for how much is packed in there.

I'll try temps again tonight and see how things are then. I guess I might have to contact Evesham (who dont exist anymore, but Geemore do so hopefully they will sort it out).

Does anyone know where i can find the 1.0.0.6 Fan Firmware? I might try flashing it back to the old to see if it makes a difference.

ask eleron for the fan firmware.... or download it from the Sager site.

how long have you had the notebook?
    - might be dust clogging the vents if you had it over 1-2 months

make sure you are not blocking the vents on the bottom or the back when using it.
    - only use it on hard/clean/flat surfaces (preferably a good notebook cooler)
    - NEVER on lap, couch, bed, or any soft surfaces

Well i wouldnt say never use it on the lap couch or bed. I use it on my lap couch bed all the time when im not doing any intensive 3d apps i.e word, chatting, and browsing while im watching t.v. Temps always stay the same.

are you using it on a hard surface though? that's a great place to pick up dust even faster.

Flashed the firmware to 1.00.07 (not quite 6 but close enough) and the temps didnt seem to change at all. I just opened it up to check for dust blockages but it looked pretty darn clean in it to be honest, had a quick blow to get out some tiny bits of fluff and poped the thing back on and rebooted. I will check the temps in a few hours to see where its at. The "Full Speed" on the 1.00.07 seems a little louder than 1.00.07sh, like its going a bit faster. Did they do something to the max fan speed?

Hmm... if thats idle temps... (with Auto or Max fans)

Then I recommend for you to check to see if the heatsink/pipes is properly secured to the videocard.... if its loose in any way, then you need to re-secure it and maybe re-apply thermal compound.

EDIT: if thats full load, then its fine.

As long as the temps do not float past 90C at any time, you are fine.

how come all your "Value" are so much higher than "Min"?
those can't be the idle temperatures. more like you just got out of the game for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Oh damn just noticed your cpu temps.. those are pretty high. Mines on load never breaks 40
I have my GPU OC'd and the highest temps I've ever gotten was 70.

Those were a few seconds after quitting Team Fortress 2. Im not sure if its blowing out the few bits of dust that was in there (i noticed a small clump on one of the heatpipes -- but it was not exactly bad, the vents under the system tend to get pretty clogged up with dust after a few weeks but i just wipe it off. Seems the majority of dust collects on the grills not inside) or the flash back to 1.00.07 but the temps appear to have dropped about 10*c in most areas. Last night after being in TF2 for a while (well for 15mins) it hit 92*c.... after about 30-50mins tonight it was 79*c.

The intake fans do attract dust so be sure to keep your desk (or whatever surface you use your machine on) very clean. Don't even give it a chance to accumulate under your pc. :)
