So yesterday the new clevo D900F BIOS was released v.05
I'm sure im not the only one that thought "YES GULFTOWN IS HERE"
I bought a Gulftown ES 980X @ 3.07GHz with 6 Cores for my desktop, as it is LGA1366 I thought id give her a whirl in the old D900F and at 32nm with the same TDP as a 975 with AS5 there would be no problem cooling,
Heres the dis/assembly:
First take the back panel off.
Then unscrew the HSF in the middle seen below. (Also used on the VGA - It seems the VGA Power outlet on the Mobo is not controlled via the Fn+1 A software method must be used)
Model:
A-Power - BS8005M2B-VGA Website Model Not Listed
I also decided to apply Arctic Silver 5 to all of the chips so next removed the VGA blower.
The Bare VGA Card.
Back VGA.
Front VGA.
CPU Blower was then removed.
Model:
A-Power - BS6005MB13-CPU Website Model Listed
CPU Heat Sink removing the TIM.
CPU Removing TIM.
Applying AS5.

Should have know better.
Need a 32nm Gulftown BIOS![]()
Thanks for reading guys![]()

Forgive me, but I lol'd at the end.

Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
I know exactly what you mean >.<
Epic Fail? -
Also, thank you for trying. -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Its going in the Desktop
Clevo will be supporting this CPU with a later release of the BIOS anyway... -
The end definitely caught me off guard.

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Kudos for trying though lol (wanted to see this work)

980X in a laptop
Epic! If only they could be accompanied by 2x5870 GPUs....
Dreams...
Nice try anyways! I'd try other OS (even Linux), maybe it is supported by BIOS and the only problem - this is ES not OEM (OEM should be clocked 3.3GHz AFAIK). -
That was informative, and entertaining in the end. Good show, and nice try.
Did you try safe mode? -
Is it possible that windows needs to be reinstalled?
Anyway if the BIOS does not support the processor it is possible to fry the motherboard and the cpu as well.

Haha thanks guys,
Safe mode etc doesnt like it it is possible windows doesnt like it, i can give her a go in linux, that was my inital idea but i thought whats the point when i cant run things like 3DM06 etc on it to find out what it can do, was thinking of booting from Hirens boot CD with Min XP so still might give that a go,
It stops just as it gets to the login screen, windows loads but as soon as a GUI need to be display it restarts, the BSOD you guys saw was from a safe mode boot (normal boot doesnt BSOD just restarts?) -
Seems simple really, BIOS don't support the CPU so it don't work
I have to ask - you paid how much for an ES CPU with no warranty, that runs at the wrong stock speed, you have no idea of the quality of the chip and Intel haven't even released the retail version yet? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The cpu works fine in his desktop where he uses it....he was just testing to see if it would work in the laptop.
The BIOS DOES support the cpu or he would not have gotten far enough to boot windows and then blue screen -
Yeah I get that he bought it for his desktop, I'm not questioning that. The current BIOS clearly doesn't support the CPU or it would work properly......pre and post Windows boot.
Mutant_Tractor - maybe try running memtest from a bootable USB/DVD and see if it will run and if it's stable - that would let us know if the CPU is happy or not and will take Windows out the equasion.
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
i can try running memtest,
I paid ~$1100 for the CPU, but it is from a very reliable source of mine in Taiwan, and as of yet i have never had an Intel chip fail on me, that and this CPU overclocks like a demon 4.5GHz on water/air up tp 6.2GHz on LN2
Stock speed does not concern me when it runs that fast.
Clevo has as of yet to confirm it but it seems logical that they will do so, i had to get a BIOS update for my EVGA E760 to run the chip so it seems i will need the same here, but it already seems the BIOS does support it but there is some other hardware that doesnt, as i said ill give memtest a whirl and let you guys know -
Can you hook me up with your Taiwan connection? $1,100 seems like a deal to have a gulftown ES. I'd like to drop it in my classy as well and break P47k in vantage!
BTW, I'm looking at the D900f very hard right now...very close on pulling the trigger. -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Sure can my friend, Check your PMs
D900F = for crunching and rendering
M980TU = Gaming -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
You cant recieve pms man so:
http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/nafusica_tw/
You know what to do -
Price is $1,250 now, still not bad. He's trust worthy? -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
No probs,
Well its $1,250 but you make an offer for $1,150 and he'll take it,
He's VERY trustworth, hes a famour verclocked by te name of Liang and gets sent ES CPUs from Intel directly to test them, the listed ones he doesnt overclock or even open out of the packets,
If you thinking desktop go for it, D900F... well wait for the BIOS and ill whack mine in here (again) and hopefully break some notebook records -
Thanks, yea, I'm definitely thinking desktop......
I was hoping to OC the D900f, but now reading these forums, looks like that will have to wait (that's if I get it....) I can't justify the cost of the 975 though with gulftown right around the corner. I have an extra 920 C0 laying around, so I'm thinking just use that for now and buy it with out the cpu. -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
You cant OC the D900F man, only change the TurboBoost settings which really got on my nads when i found out, hence my petition for an OCing BIOS
920 will do nicely, the stepping doesnt matter as we cant overclock >.> -
When I first saw the d900F in Max. pc mag, I thought it was too good to be true! A desktop cpu in a laptop...I thought, man, OC that puppy...why would you ever buy anything else! No sooooo. Ha. Well it will still serve its purpose for what I will use it for.
Thanks again! -
I just saw this thread today.
If you say that the BSOD appears just before the login screen - then to me it really sounds like a Windows issue, not a BIOS issue. Maybe loading the wrong kernal or something? Is there anyway you can try installing Windows with the 980X installed? Maybe you have a spare hard drive you could drop in to experiment with? -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
I do indeed, i could try that and see how it goes,
Not soon though, all tied up with ebay listings -
Clear to me it's a windows issue ...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
If it was a blue screen, it has to be a windows issue...that is where blue screens come from
Do you have a server OS you can load to see if it reads the cpu ok? -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
I have a few copies of server OS's, Win Srv 08 should work okay... ill try that out but at the mo its in my desktop under the WCing loop so itll be a while
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
no rush, like seeing these experiments though
still want someone to try 4850 CF (from the Alienware M17) in a D901c chassis! -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
If anyones interested heres my DT build log type thread:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=4223427#post4223427
If its not allowed ill get rid of the link -
So what's the news? Did you try other OS-s? Any luck so far?
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Hi man,
No benches as of yet, im at uni so itll be the weekend, once the rest of my coolant and gear arrives ill do some benches for my DT, then ill install the srv OS in the D900F and see if i cant break some records (or boot) -
it will work and boot
if it didnt support it then it would never pass post -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
True that... so it is a windows issue, i wonder if XP would support it, probably not although Win7 does have better multi-threading capabilities
-
Have you considered Windows 7 RTM for the upcoming experiment. That way you don't have to worry about a product key.
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Iv been having Desktop trouble cooling wise with this CPU so itll be next week before i get to try it in my laptop
-
Doh!
OK, waiting with baited breath -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
The pump i bought for my WCing (Iwaki RD-30) is a bit too powerful even with an EK400 res so im just modding the pc to allow for it
-

Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Oh its not the temps its the cavitation caused by the pump, its a 30ft head pump, Im sunning a PA120.3 with 3x Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000's (115CFM each)
I need to add more restriction into the loop, so im waiting on my X58 block (still after 2 months cause EK cant keep up) and i need 2 more 8800 GTX/Ultra Blocks from EK which i cant find anywhere as of yet...
EDIT:
Atm im Oc'd @ 4.00GHz with temps of 36*C-46*C Per Physical core with HT running, Trying to go for around 4.5-4.8 stable in Linx and then ill try get a WPrime32M of <4s At the mo im hitting 4.3s so not too far to go i figure another 300MHz will do that -
You will be one of the first to do it!
C'mon. And ideally you need to clock it to 3.3GHz. -
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Thats true, but the thing is the CPU runs @ 3.07GHz as standard, and due to no OCing in the BIOS i cant clock it to 3.33GHz :/
I could try e-leet but it isnt overclocking in the proper sense
I can downclock it to 3.33GHz and run it in the DT with all the relevant benchmarks, then run it in the laptop to see how much of a DT replacement it really is
Im doing a lot of benching for HwBot now:
So ill be attempthing this new OCing challenge for the highest 3DM01 score with a 980-X, Break out the insulation + 4.5Kg LN2 Pot -
What is your WPrime32 score @stock?
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
I didnt run it @ stock but ran it @ 3.5GHz and i was getting 5.1s
-
So @3.3GHz would be around 5.5s. Still impressive. Any 3dmark06?
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
3DM06 W/1x 8800Ultra = 15/16K cant quite remember... not much change there
-
-
Mutant_Tractor Notebook Evangelist
Ahhh i get you now 6800
-
That's nice! Far from the IBM Power7 64-cores but heck, this is our top runner for the rest of the 2010 at least.
