I know I need to flip over the laptop and unscrew the backplate, but how can I go about cleaning the computer without damaging it?

Hey mate, what I do is get a small soft bristled brush, hold then fan gently so it doesn't move, brush gently to loosen the dust up then use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out then vents whilst holding the fans down still. Time to time I spray a little ispopropyl alcohol in the vents just to give it a bit more of a clean.

You can remove the fans themselves by unplugging the connector and then unscrewing the 3 screws holding each fan down, they simply lift up and are not attached to the rest of the heatsink assembly.

No, just don't go crazy when you tighten them as the brackets are only plastic.

Another good way from keeping the fan from moving is to put something small like a pencil in it.
