I guess because they don't send units for CNET to review or CNET doesn't even know them to request a review unit.

More likely because they don't buy advertising on CNET or any of their affiliates.

I always wondered about that too, it took me a long time to decide to buy a sager, mainly people on this forum convinced me.I was considering the other featured laptops like dell and alien ware ext ext, and looking and comparing the specs to "competition" it was no brainier.

Tell u what, i should my unit on monday :(, still clearing customs, ill write in an honest opinion and compare it to my Dell, although old.
    Cant wait!

Sometimes you will find them under other brands. For example you with find the D901C (NP9262) predecessor on cnet (D900C) under other brands. Link1 Link2

The above aforementioned reasons are probably the source of the problem, but I still think it is a problem. Sager (Clevo whatever) makes an excellent product, and typically it's on par or less expensive than the alternatives, which, in my opinion, are inferior products.

The way I found out about Sager is though a large amount of research. My brother bought one a while back (guinea pig) and his nearly three and a half year old laptop is still his computer of choice, even after buying newer ones with more frills and upgraded parts.

Seems like Sager advertising works more along the lines of word of mouth rather than typical outlets (I've seen two dell commercials since I woke up which was an hour ago).

Though this is a problem, I'm not sure I want Sager to be a big brand like Dell. The big question I have is would product quality suffer if the company grew to be as big as dell and its other competitors? Dell has been selling more pieces of crap to consumers per year than Sager has sold in maybe 3 (I'm guessing at these numbers here). In the past five years, I've purchased two dell units, both of which gave me headache after headache before dying before their time. My brother hasn't had an issue yet.

In my opinion, Dell is equal to Sager in build quality. I had a Dell Inspiron 9400 before I got my NP5793, and I can tell you that the Dell performed really good. Build quality and everything was very nice. Everything except the screen...which is crap on both laptops. It's a bit worse on the NP5793 thought. Way to dark..

Oh and Dell also has excellent service. Can't say anything about Sager service as I haven't used them yet.

CNet only reviews big and popular products for general consumers. For example, you won't find a lot of video card reviews on their website.

Having owned both a sager 5791 and a dell xps 1730, and an HP nx9420,both the dell and the sager are behind the hp.
Other than that, all 3 are amazing laptops, and I can attest to XoticPc`s customer service as being personal and prompt, whereas Hp`s and Dell`s are a pain in the ***,when it comes to patience..
Haven`t dealt with techs, and hope I won`t have to. Ever.

In fairness though, the NX is a business model, compared to the Sager/Dell consumer models.

it would be like K-mart sending in one of their Generic Brands. People don't usually want to buy something that is Generic, even if it is cheaper. Maybe if it comes to what paper plates your going to use at your 6 yr old girls birthday party, but were talking about a laptop, often times a social status of who you are. And most people like the flashy lights, or the slim smooth looks, basically the style of the laptops, which the generic laptops don't have.

I don't see how Sager laptops are any more generic than dell or any other mainstream brand. In a highly competitive space such as laptop computers, brand names need to be repeatedly beaten into consumers minds to distract from product quality or to distinguish a truly generic product from the mass of other similarly generic products. Sager is a very welcome exception. The product quality speaks for itself so despite the lack of advertisement, they still sell, albeit less units than a more heavily advertised brand.

Alienware is a completely separate situation. It caters specifically to what you said, flashy lights, status, etc. It is truly a unique product, as is Sager. Just different types of unique: one focuses on aesthetics, the other on performance and quality.

Eh, that depends. If you get the 9800M GT and X9100 M860TU, the M15X in any configuration is outperformed by it. And there are still some resellers that offer it with X9100 and 9800M GT. Not many though.

    steven,

You may want to wait until you've received your m15x, and have used it for a while, before you begin preaching the doctrines of the Hive Mind :p .

High performance custom boutiques = generic Kmart brands?

it is a simply over looking the game crowd that like sager products. i know for a fact that sager has gone further by word of blog or forums than by ads. i bought my 1sr sager in 2002 5620np 1.6ghz with 512memory and intergrate 64megs of vid memory (ati card 7500 series). sager doesn't need to go big, they make more than enough profit by staying under the radar. dell, alienware are over priced.

I disagree. Clevo is the brand (ODM), Sager is just the shop - and only the US shop at that (OEM). Just like Kobalt or Nexus or Eurocom are 'just' shops and it's equally hard to find a review of a Kobalt Mojave as of a Sager 5796. So if Sager spends tons on advertising, all the other 'shops' will piggy back off its expense. That's mainly why we're all advertising Clevos on these forums ;)

More than enough profit? No actually. Just because something is expensive to you and me, doesn't meant there are fat profits there. Just look at Detroit today. If I go out and spend $20,000 on a Ford, has someone just made fat profits? Actually the only way to make ends meet with Clevos is if you sell them by the truck load. That gives you the negotiating power with Clevo. For resellers, net profit seems to be a eye-watering 0.5% per machine.

no, that isn't right. in order for any clevo vender to place a product per say bestbuy, they actually have to pay a product display fee which inturn can add up to a great deal of cash being lost if that product isn't being sold enough to make up for moneys lost and to replenish profit margins. it is by far that we advertise by word of mouth or forums to ensure that great products like these stay in the market place.

Detroit is a joke or basically the CEO's are that are destroying great car companies to the ground because of lack of future planning

If clevos were "High end" like people claim, than they would put forth the advertising and they would out sale their competitors. Like I said, I got the clevo m860tu, and right out of the box my keyboard was popping out of it's placement, high end? I have bought 7 or 8 laptops, Dell, HP, ASUS... and none of them ever came, or had a problem like that, that isn't high end, that's poor quality.

The fact is, Clevo is a mass producer of generic computers, that gets sent to companies like Dell, AW, HP etc... where they are than re branded, upgraded, and sold to the public. Clevo doesn't use the best hardware, they use cheap hardware, and that allows them to sale at a cheap price.

And bang 4 buck isn't a set standard, if bang for the buck to me is the best looks for the best buy, than performance has nothing to do with it.

Steven, you have to admit, the m860tu overall is a more solid build than the m15x can ever be. In fact, your taking a big risk buying the m15x after knowing all the problems associated with it. Anyway, can't tell you anything else but I will be looking out for your troubleshooting or overheating posts in the months to come on the forums.

steven, do you know anything about marketting. basically there are 2 ways to make money...spend alot in ads and hope people like it or provide to various online computer venders and let them rename thier product for a price. i am sure that in its day the alienware was and somewhat still is a decent computer maker. but with profit margins taking a big hit in the last 5 to 7 yrs and everyone has to increase prices one way or another.

You should not base the .m15x experience based simply on your own experience because >everyone have a different point of view and >there's a probability that your product does not work as expected (or the opposite). Saying every .m15x is falling apart is to generalize the problem, but saying the M860TU have a poor build quality because the keyboard pops is the same. You could argue that there is not a lot of users who reported bad things about the .m15x, but you are also the only one who have complained that the hard drive made your palms sweat.

In addition, I believe everyone should take in consideration the fact that the .m15x have BinaryFX and smart bay, which justifies (a part of) the extra in the price.

If for you, the high-end criteria is a not poping keyboard, then we could say, for example, the Asus EEE Pc is a high-end laptop. And of course, because the keyboard is poping out, this means the whole computer is cheap.

First of all, Asus makes their own computers. Second of all, its more Compal who sends its lapop to other brands ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compal_Electronics).

Also, in what you said, I understand that:

    HP/Dell = good quality
Clevo = cheap hardware = cheap price
But Clevo sends their laptop to HP/Dell, so Clevo laptops ---> HP/Dell laptops
So why wouldn't HP/Dell laptops have cheap hardware since the barebone have.

as far as i'm concern, one great laptop that is invented with great bells and whistles makes way for another great laptop to take some of the same ideas and make it better for bigger expansion

Clevo cannot advertise their product, because you know it as a Sager 5793, and I know it as Rock Extreme 770. If they put an end to 'Sager' 'Rock' etc, telling them to stamp 'Clevo' on the lids or shut up shop (plus 'Clevo' marketing blitz), that would add a few hundred to the price. I prefer it as it is.

All computers are generic, and all the 'upgrades' are more or less the same, give or take really minor components. Even the manufacturing processes of system boards don't vary in quality these days. What Clevo does, is focus on the gamer, and is nimble - eg it is the first out there shipping a 9800MGT Centrino 2 when others are just 'unveiling'. It also does heat really well.

But because it is 98% the same as a Dell or Alienware (just different collection of parts), what I get is 1) top end gaming laptops 3 months before everyone else and 2) get the same spec as Alienware or Dell for a few hundred less (like for like) 3) Cooling solutions better than most on the market.
