The TV is an HP, and I'm connecting with a DVI -> HDMI converter via the DVI output on the back of the laptop. The signal will appear on the TV, but the picture is cut off around the edges. Any resolution I should set it to before enabling the output in order to get a good picture?

    1080 is 1920 x 1080
    720 is 1280 x 720

If it is more or less then it will be slightly cut off.
Tv's dont adapt to other resolutions like most monitors do.

There are also 720p TVs that use 1366x768 so try that if 1280x720 doesn't work.

most 720p tv's are 1366x768 but they upscale a true 720p signal, regardless.

    1080i tv's are actually 1440x1080. the 1080p tv's are 1920x1080.

Oh and the Hz has to be the same, otherwise the tv goes crazy.
