Pretty much all the resellers offer the same Sager warranty (1 or 3 years). I was curious as to how well the customer service is at Sager since that's who I'd be entrusting my laptop to.

I mean, no offense, but if I my phone call gets forwarded to 1-800-INDIA I don't think I will spring for the 3 years unless I get some really positive responses.

What is the standard OEM warranty? 1 yr?? is the extra warranty offered by the retailer??? If so then most likely the warranty service will be done by 'their own' repair facility and NOT sager.

    for example.....
BestBuy is notorious for telling people their extended service plans are from the manufacturer when in fact its BestBuys own warranty service centers that take care of all the work.
BestBuy is also known for buying wholesale products with no implied warranty from the manufacturer and the warranty is with bestbuy. These will be re-badged model numbers that are not found at the OEM manufactures inventory

The standard warranty is 1 year by Sager. You have the option to upgrade to a 3 year Sager warranty. It's the same warranty but it's for an additional two years.

I've been looking at PowerNotebooks and Xotic PC specifically and have talked to both companies. Regardless if you get the 1 or 3 year warranty, the machine is being shipped directly to Sager and no one else.

well if the actual extended service plan is offered by the manufacturer then you should be pretty safe. I would make sure the paperwork explicitly states the work will be done by sager and not by a service center of 'choice' which some service plans will have.

Extended warranties are all 'insurances' and are all underwritten like normal insurance policies for such things as abnormal unforeseen losses for model year. And insurances usually will dictate the less expensive way to repair a product.

Yeah, I am pretty confident that PowerNotebooks or Xotic PC would not lie with their reputation.

So back to the original question, is Sager reliable and will I have to put up a fight to get my notebook fixed?

I would recommend to go through a Sager reseller, rather than getting directly through Sager themselves. The resellers (such as PowerNotebooks or Xotic) have great reputations for service and support over Sager normally.

Am I just interpreting this e-mail wrong then? This is from Ron @ PowerNotebooks:

Yes, if your laptop ever needed to be repaired then they would setup up an RMA for Repair and you would be shipping it back to Sager for service. They no longer use a third party and so you get the better service since Sager works on the computer themselves.

From what I gather Sager is doing the support and not the reseller. I don't see any other warranty options for PowerNotebooks that would indicate they service the notebooks themselves.

If the problem is hardware related, then, true, it would probably go to Sager for RMA.

Software and standard component issues are usually diagnosed [even by phone or email] and can be fix without having to send the entire unit to Sager. Its just more time efficient.

If something physically needs to be fixed, then it goes back to Sager.

But if you need to ask a support question, you ask Powernotebooks. Because they are available more hours and will respond to you quicker, like Gophn said.

As Gophn suggested, go through a reseller to buy your Sager. I think the key reason for that is better prices.
I've had no problems dealing with Sager. You aren't going to get forwarded to India (domestic support as far as I know). The last email I sent them about my system was returned in a few hours and sent by a real person and not an automated system.
As Ron said, you send the notebook directly to Sager if it needs warranty work.
