^^^^The screen is a clear, bright, 72% gamut, LG LP173WF2 screen that many are liking... :)

I'm deciding between the sager with 485m with matte screen or the origin with 485m and glossy screen

    thoughts?

I assume the matte screen is 3D? In that case, go matte. It has double the refresh rate and 3D capable, for the same price.

Is LG LP173WF2 the model name of the 3D matte screen??

I just checked, and it doesn't seem to be. Anyone know the model of the 3D matte screen? I'd like to buy it off eBay or somewhere. I don't have the 485, but I can still take advantage of the refresh rate, no?

Yep, you should be able to use the 120hz even without having a 3D capable card- just like you can use the resolution. Both are native panel capabilities. If you can find the screen and install it, you can get the 120hz.

Yes the full model number is LP173WF2 (LGD02C5).
BTW, this is the same screen that the Alienware M17x R3 3D screen is... ;)

    Hi everyone,

I was damned by buying the Sager NP8170 a month ago before the 3D Matte screen was offered. Now I feel so annoyed and wish I could replace my current screen (which is the Glossy 90% NTSC one, cost me extra $220!!).

Since I can't return my laptop to change the screen I thought I could buy the 3D screen and install it by myself (hope that's easy enough). But before that I'd really like to confirm that LP173WF2 (LGD02C5) is the correct model since the ones I found on the internet didn't mention anything about 120Khz or 3D capability. Moreover, directing me to the best place to buy it from would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers.

Be careful when buying online. A lot of retailers offer a screen and say "or similar" there. This means you may or may not get the screen you ordered. If they don't list the 120hz or 3D capability, odds are it's not the same screen.

Dell, Clevo and other big guys are taking them all. Also from what I have seen this screen has a 50 pin connector. Your model has a 40 pin connector.
So this LP173WF2 (LGD02C5) screen would not be a plug and play screen for you. Sorry. :(

Damn, well then, are there new matte screens coming soon? Or should I settle for the old B173HW01-V5?

The B173HW01-V5 is a very good screen, I do not know of anyone that does not love it! New models of screens should be coming out by this fall. We hope.

I can get that or wait and see if a 3D screen comes out that will work with my GPU and setup, no? I don't doubt the screen is great I just kind of want the ability for 3D, even if I don't use it ever.

    Hi Everyone,

Guys be careful. Below is the reply I got from my reseller when I asked him if I could replace my screen with a 3D one.

"Unfortunately we cannot ship out the 3D screen as there was a new motherboard revision when the screen was released that allows you to use the 3D. The motherboard would need to be replaced, which is why Sager won’t send out just the 3D screen."

This means that changing the screen alone is not enough to get 3D.

The 3D Screen model is the only thing that actually makes me accept the downgrade to a 1080p display. Still, when I will get a new laptop next year I feel that for the first few months I will cry after my old 1200p display that I have now.

Can I even use the 3D screen or no? Obviously, 3D won't work for me, but what about 2D?

i guess, it should work fine in 3d if it doesn't have any special cables connected to the motherboard. But why then all the resellers offer it "only with 485M"? if you do install it - you'll be pleasantly amazed how smooth and crispy 120hz screen may be) there is a hard time to differ 60hz from 120hz when you first use it, but going backwards should suprise you!

That doesn't make much sense when you consider that the non-3D NP8170 is already supposed to work with an external 120Hz 3D monitor when used together with Nvidia's 3D Vision Wireless Glasses Kit which comes supplied with a plug in 3D emitter.

So if that is the case, why wouldn't the Nvidia Wireless Glasses Kit work with a non-3D NP8170 fitted with an internal 120Hz 3D display?

The 120hz screen doesn't use the same size video connection cable, hence the need for the new motherboard to support it. Otherwise the standard 3d kit will work just fine with say, an external display.

So, don't get the 3D screen then? If that's the case, I kind of want to wait and see if they come out with more 3D screens. Any ETA?

I'm starting to regret my NP8170. Would have liked the 95% matte screen as an option on the NP8130/8150. No such option for NP8170. Plus ordering it as new is less than $100 which is a good bargain IMHO.
