I'm considering entering the world of gaming laptops. (See my other post http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha.../752510-pretty-set-sager-clevo-good-idea.html)

I've got a question about the P170SM-A specifically and wanted to get some input from some owners:

    How is the touchpad?

I've read several reviews for the P177 and there are alot of people who seem to say it is a little iffy. I think I like the way the P170's looks because it isn't sunk down in the case as much.

    Thanks!

I have a p177, out of the box it seems like the track pad is terrible but once you play with the settings in the included software it's fantastic imo.

I've never had a problem with it when I got the chance to play around on one. Definitely not something I'd consider bad.

Is it just that they aren't 'sensitive' enough out of the box? I guess what I'm asking is - what sort of settings do you need to alter (not specifics but a general idea) to make it feel nicer?

Thanks. I was hoping that this would be basically what the answers came back with.

I'm alright with a little tweaking as long as it doesn't end up being a pain for the entire life of the laptop.

I'm not sure if it's the multi-touch like the one in my 8258-S, but if it is, it comes 'out of the box' much MUCH too sensitive yet the tracking way way too slow.

To fix it on mine, I had to drastically turn down the pages per scroll from the set 6 (8 on my wife's) to 3.

Then set the pointer speed from 3 (6 on my wife's) to 10.

Then I disabled pinch/push to zoom gestures (if multi-touch).

it made the trackpad pleasurable to use.

Again, not sure if you have the same one, but if anyone else can verify, then once the settings are tweaked, the trackpad is quite accurate, zippy, and fun to use.

Thanks. Exactly what I was curious about.

BTW, is the touchpad smoother? On my 5160… it's like course sandpaper. It works fine, after tweaking to my personal desire, but I can't believe they used something that coarse. Just lame. Lot of people hated it. I use a trackball most of the time, but the few occasions I use it, still irks me to this day.
