I am thinking about getting a Sager NP8150 (with a 6990M), and I am worried whether it will last me or not. I would like to use it for ideally 4 years. Are games going to advance so much that the 6990M won't be able to handle them in 3 to 4 years?
EDIT: sorry if this is in the wrong place :x I'll recreate some where else if applicable

i think that it would probably last a long time, but if you feel that its getting slow(can't run any new games at all) there will be other cards that will be compatible with the 8150.

It all depends on whether we continue to get console ports designed with outdated hardware in mind or whether we get more games designed for the PC. Either way, you can always lower settings and stay at native resolution or lower resolution a little. As mentioned previously, you will also have the option of installing a new GPU as well. I bet in 4 years we will have such better laptops that you will want to sell and upgrade anyway.

If you properly take care of it, as in dust it out regularly, try and keep it away from smoke as much as possible and no accidental drops off the table then you should be good for a long while. You'll definitely switch your notebook due to outdate-ism. Yes i JUST made that word up! :D

If I got a Sager or anything around that caliber of laptop, I would take a bullet for it. It would be my baby xD!

Is technology advancing so quickly that my laptop will be obsolete in 2 years? :c

Depends on what you mean by obsolete. Newer games won't run as well on it, so it all depends on what games you play. If you're an avid gamer that likes to play the latest stuff, then you'll be lucky to eek 3 years out of it.

Personally, I've found buying the least expensive laptop with the best components at the time, and the NP8130 is probably it, use it for 12-18 months, sell it, and buy another. Probably be cheaper in the long run, even if you decide to upgrade CPU and GPU. Buy for $1200, sell for $600, buy another for $1200.

I think I'm going to do that, but instead of getting a new laptop, i'll just get a desktop or upgrade a desktop in 2-3 years.

Hmm haven't really checked on eBay, but how is the resale market for used Sager?

It is more like a Honda/Toyota or is it a GM/Ford?

more like not to many people know about sager, so it depends if the person who is buying the system and when u sell. maybe if there was more advertisment about sager/clevo then maybe they would be more known. i wish i knew about them 15 years ago when i first started getting into pc games.

Wingnut hit the nail on the head.

I'm running an 8700m, I've had this Sager for 3.5 years and i still play BC2 on it at low settings, but that's a personal preferences. Some people might want eye candy all the time, if that's the case then 2 years down the line you might want an upgrade.

Gotta agree. The cycle of "obsolete" parts within the computer industry is, at first, quite depressing. But, you can often manage ways around it, downsizing the hit to your wallet and getting the most juice of your systems. Sager is a good way to go for that.

The GTX 8800m was king of the hill 4 years ago (much like your 6990m), and nbc still has it ranked as a class 1 card. For comparison's sake, similar cards (6770m/555m) are still fully capable of handling most games in high, and some games in ultra.

Historically, notebook GPUs progress much slower than desktop counterparts. HOWEVER, in recent years, that hasn't been the case. Manufacturers used to put their focus on providing adequate performance while keeping power consumption reasonable. The entire thought of TDP has gone out the window for the high-end cards. Mobile cards today are pushing >100 watts. This is really no better than a desktop card (mostly because they pretty much ARE desktop cards). For comparison's sake, the desktop GTX 550 Ti sits pretty at 116. The GTX 8800m sipped 35. This is because ATI/Nvidia feel they can just focus on power, and let the graphics switching handle the the "eco-side" of things.

    Figure this one out:

    520m - 20 watts (ok)
    6490m - 30 watts (still reasonable)
    540m - 35 watts (no prob)
    6770m - 35 watts (mhm)

    Still with me? Okay.

560m - 75 watts (wait what just happened?)
    6970m - 100 watts (holy s***!)

Ultimately, your laptop will die before the 6990m gets outdated, that much is a guarantee.

I think it will definitely last for four years. Don't forget you can always lower the resolution for more demanding games and get decent sharpness as long you keep the ratio the same as the native.

Parts Warranty FTW? I'm probably getting an outside accidental warranty from a company that does warranties on a bunch of other stuff besides laptops (they make those companys! pretty cool right? Just found out :p)

If I get 6990M, I'm going to treat it like a baby! Just browsing? still putting on cooling stand! gaming for long hours? taking breaks and switching to desktop with OK graphics card :p
The laptop is a huge thing to me and i'm going to take good care of it. I was just wondering if it would start sucking at playing games anytime soon (like less than medium) which it seems like it will not! Thank you everyone! :D

No amount of care would "insure" that your laptop lasts even 2 years. Warranty is the only way.

Electronics are something completely outside your control. Stuff like static electricity damage don't show up until a year, two years, even three years down the line. Heat is also something that slowly eats away at your components. But then again, so does temperature change from hot -> cold. Many things.

Probably 15-20% of all laptops will have a doctor's visit by the third year, however minor or major. You're playing the lottery, just like everyone else.

And yeah, there's plenty. Squaretrade's a big one. Mastercard matches manufacturer warranty for up to a year. And you can also buy property insurance for your notebook. That's my rule of thumb anyway. 10% of the laptop's cost for 3 years warranty is a steal, 15% is about average, 20% probably isn't worth it.
