My AC Adapter is nearing two years of service, should I buy a spare now and avoid a potential downtime when it breaks down?

Also, should I order the 180w variant?

Seriously, what the hell, you are really expecting it to break down? WHY???
If you are expecting it to fail, it will fail.
The mind is a powerful tool. It will backfire if used inappropriately (and thats what you're doing right now).

    Indeed b0b.

It never hurts to have a spare but the brick should last as long as the machine if it's not thrown around.

While they can break there really isnt an expected life time out of them. For one to go bad is pretty rare but it happens just like any other electronics failure. The only thing to do is plan ahead like you want to now and have a second one ready. It may never fail but it if does you'll be ready. Its kinda like buying a spare hard drive incase the one in there fails.

Yes, the bricks aren't necessarily problem children for laptops, but it never hurts to have a spare. As long as you don't abuse the adapter and as long as it's not subjected to many power spikes/sags, then it should last you.

I like having two around the flat anyway, it means I can move between my two favorite locations without lugging the brick with me.

yea, i was thinking of buying a spare, if ever i did, will it be advisable to buy the 180w variant? instead of the 120w?

Only if you think your demands are high enough for it. If you've used the 120W without missing a beat, then it's not necessary. :)

Get a 150W one like mine. Fortron 150W with 8 interchangeable tips for almost any laptop.
Size is exactly like a 120W, but with a nice 3-wire cable and 30W extra headroom.
    Its just the perfect deal...

EDIT: It also comes with a sleek carrying pouch. :D

There have been some bad stories i've heard when doing so. I'd spend a little more to get an OEM one instead of taking the risk of damaging the computer.

The Fortron is one of the few out there that I fully trust. It just works! Almost no heat from it, compared to my old 180W on the HM laptop.

I hear the Corsair 120W is worth it too. But it costs........

I wish they could make a 180W or 220W series! Fortron adapters are cool! :D

Well, I was able to find them in an internet shop in my country!
Check on some of the shops near you, there may be some of those for sale!

I'm with Hutsady on this - go with OEM for quality assurance. Corsair, however, is generally pretty reliable. If it's just a spare, then maybe buying third party isn't the worst thing - but just throw caution to the wind.

I've used a corsair one before and it worked fine for my acer.
