I know that no one knows this for sure, but I still want to know about how long the current MXM will last so I can have an idea on the upgradability on the X7200.

hard to say.. for the d90x series.. when the 8800m came out everyone was ready for upgrade paths.. then they needed new mobo's.. that was a debacle.
the last card that worked for it was the 280m 2.1 rev.a all the later rev's wouldn't work. hopefully it will support newer cards.. yet again cards are soo expensive when bought as upgrade kits. they run as much as 700 per card.. the top nvidia ones anyways..

i hope it lasts.. but there is absolutely no way to know.

Then again, I probably won't even have the money to upgrade graphic cards in a laptop. Sucks to be a student.

Well mxm2.1 lasted pretty long, I bet you will have a chance for a good upgrade but you might run into other problems (BIOS, power, cooling...).

It's good to be able to remove your GPU, if it does die then at least you wont have to buy a new motherboard.

Do you guys think there will be a MXM point revision (3.1 a/b, etc...) revision once PCI-E 3.0 is finalized?

There will definitely bee a new MXM version, but it should be.... (looks in his crystal ball) no sooner than summer 2011.

Makes sense. The MXM 3.0 Rev 1.1 spec would be exactly two years old in the summer of 2011.

Looks like 2012 is going to be a banner year. Ivy bridge, availability/implementation of a new MXM spec, new intel chipset with native USB 3.0 support (also hopefully supporting PCI-E 3.0), possibly Win 8.

I think I read somewhere about Windows 8 being two years away. So yes, 2012 will be a nice year for our computers.
But I need a computer right now and I can't wait that long, nor do I want to.

I don't think thats true, I thought someone figured out at some point how to flash the bios of the older d90x series to support the newer cards. unless you are talking about an even older d90x

it's in the archives. the D900C was out.. then people were all ready for the upgrade path they were touting. They started taking pre-orders for the cards.. single and sli. Then they announced that there was an issue with the cards in the d900c.. Mobo update came with package deals for upgrade path with new card(s). New Rev D901C. I got my d901c just when this was going down and had to wait for eurocrap to get the updated mobo for my single 8800m. All they had at the time were d900c's..

it was still a shock to the scene and kinda lame.. cuz they advertised the upgrade path..

That would really be something, I would buy the first notebook that has 3 GPUs even if it was bad in every other way.

AMD Fusion APU with two discrete GPUs.

Nvidia doesn't design their GPUs efficiently enough to fit three in a notebook.
