I have never bought a "high-end" laptop, and I have always had cheap average consumer laptops, and the CD drives always seemed farley loud while playing games or installing stuff (even louder than the fan when its running hot). Do the Sager/Clevo computers have this problem? specifically the NP5797?

With the m860tu, depends on the disk. I haven't noticed DVD movie making too much noise and thank god. But older CDs and some DVDs that aren't reading properly, the drive goes into overtime and you can hear that thing WORK!

I had the regular DVD-RW then later upgraded to BR. Compare to the "cheap average consumer laptops", they are the same I afraid. But the noise level are definitely not annoying, Especially my speakers are much louder during movies and gaming.

Really....because my m860tu drive is absurdly loud pretty much all the time. Louder than my fans at full blast.

Maybe the blu-ray drive is quieter?

I totally agreed with deathwinger as mine's a bluray readable plus read and write for dvd and cdrs(np9262) did and do exactly the same. For cds or dvds expecially burned type or non originals, the drive works while producing a sound like 'mini tornado's incoming' and often slow down and stop halfway or in between intervals while processing the disk. Therefore sadly so but i've to conclude that sager's drives are leaning towards the sensitive or selective side. My sony AR series's drive beat my sager drive flat out in reading and writing disks.

While installing xp with a slightly old burned CD it felt like there was a earthquake, it was stuttering like crazy the whole laptop was shaking. But outside that it's reasonable, CD and DVD are a bit loud when the computer first read them especially burned CD, while watching a DVD movie it's well under speaker noise and I never play game with CD in the tray so I can't tell

With the default DVD drive from Eurocom
