With the whole 17 inch series of super notebooks that have been coming out, I asked myself if I would be able to use one in my lap. The last laptop I had was a Dell D820. I remember being a little worried about the fan on the bottom getting covered up at all that might cause it to overheat. The problem was that the fan was located exactly where my thigh was.
So my question is this:
If you get a new notebook (say the Sager 9262) with full options (dream machine) will it work ok on your lap?
-
Yes, but make sure you spread your legs (no tittering, chuckling, smirks, or wisecracks) a little bit to allow the fans for air flow. Or if you put your leg over the other you can prop the back of the 9262 onto your leg that is on top of the other leg, while the from of the laptop rests on your upper anterier thigh. Not too uncomfortable, but also not too comfortable. And with a fully fledged 9262 (im guessing around 14-15 lb), it gets heavy on your lap pretty quick, but you get broken in to it. I've had mine for almost a month, and I've gotten used to it. Doesn't bother me at all. In my opinion, having a fully fledged 9262 outweighs the negativity in notebook-to-lap comfort as 20 oil tankers is worth to a barrel of oil (only analagy I could think of offf the top of my head, don't judge me lol).
P.S. Alternatively you could get a 5793, it weighs a bit less. But if money isn't an option then go for the 9262. It's a whole lot more future-proof for it's sli capabilities and the choice of having a desktop processor (such as one of the best the best OCable processors, the Q6600 : )). -
Yea I use it in my lap. One day I was sitting outside with it and I had the fans on max and I was getting core temps in the high 20s to low 30s. The centre fans were the only ones that seemed to be blocked. I was pretty surprised.
For gaming, I probably wouldn't set it on my lap unless I had a notebook cooler and even with an added notebook cooler that will start to get uncomfortable (at least mine does) -
I use my laptop on my lap. Though i use a Lapdesk most of the time to give it extra air, but i do use it on my lap without that when not playing a game usually. laptop in sig.
-
i use mine on my lap all the time. While gaming especially, i just spread my legs so the fans in the middle have proper flow, gpu never gets above 77C rarely, and cpu in the 50'sC. I hear its not good though if you are a polygamist and want 35 children as it might harm your family jewels.

Thanks for the input everyone. Was good news all around. -
I mostly use it an hour a day on my lap, it doesn't get that hot
-
Yea, it can cause impotence, and it ain`t a joke.
To each their own... -
How can it cause impotece? Now Im scared, I don't wanna be steril.
-
Maybe if you really put it on your things and they get hot all the time but normally I put my notebook at the end so everything stays cool ^^
-
Remember people there's a difference between being steril and being impotent.
Having a cellphone in your pocket can also cause sterility. -
Due to the fact that laptops are parts that tend to get hot.
Even a 2C increase in temperatures in the sensitive area can lead to impotence or sterility if used on a long term basis...
I sugest using a laptop pad or something similar so that the actual laptop does not touch your legs directly. -

I cut and sanded 1/16" plywood board for my 5793 and use it when I wanna rest it on my lap, or cover the keyboard with it when I want to eat over it

If you guys know me, you would know what I would say.
I would not recommend using your notebooks, especially if they are gaming notebooks on any surface that is not flat, hard, clean.
If you are to use it on your lap, you must:
- monitor your temps to make sure there is no overheating
- make sure you are not blocking airflow (the vents on the bottom)
- recommend to use a LapDesk or equivalent
- or use a Notebook Cooler (even as a stand) -
I usually have it on my knees, not directly on my lap
-
Here's an easy, effective lapboard:
Cut out two pieces of pegboard the width and depth of your notebook. Glue the two pieces together with quarter inch spacers between them. (I used nine 3/4x3/4x1/4 pieces of pegboard for the spacers.)
The whole assembly is very light and allows more air for the fans than is available when the notebook sits directly on a desktop. -
The reason I ask this and have a problem with always using it on a desk is because I do not see a purpose to getting a mobile computer if you do not use it on the go at all. If I wanted to always use it on a desk I would get a light desktop system.
But still thanks for all the input. Except for the sterility stuff haha. -
i tried using my 17"er on my notebook cooler (zalman nc2000) but it was just way too uncomfortable.
thinkgeek has a product called the lapinator, which has a nice flat rigid surface, and cushy underside for lap/legs/knees/whatever you are resting it on, and does cut down on heat being transferred to you from the laptop. been using one and its working out great. -
PLUS if you're on a wireless router/WiFi.... guess wat? now your radiating all your kids!!

I was at best buy the other week for some other reason, but walking by I noticed one of these lap desks. I picked one up, and I gotta say, I really like it. It has more than enough room for my 17" np5790 and a mouse, and also doubles very well when eating in front of the tv!

Don't laugh,
I used this:

Just high enough to place the laptop, enough air flow for laptop breathing, and nice to sit it on the ground (and not touch carpet) -
My brother uses a TV tray.
How many use notebooks in your lap?
