So I heard a lot of good reviews about Clevo and how they are upgradeable, question is how much is it upgradeable?

Do they use same gpu slot for all their laptops or only some?
Can you easily buy the CPU, GPU on the market or do you have to order one specifically?
    Can motherboards be upgraded?

    Thanks,
    Lord Corvin

It really depends on the model that you are looking at for what kind of upgrades are available. They are all generally pretty easy to open up, have access to the upgradable parts, and don't require a lot of extra tear-down to do some of the changes. That is true across about all the models mostly.

The newer laptops with the option to upgrade the graphics card is going to use some version of an MXM graphics card, mostly MXM B 3.0 is used right now I believe. But not all models have this feature. It is usually just some of the higher up models that have that as an option. A lot of the CPUs are now integrated on to the motherboard, as there aren't any socketed 5th generation or 6th generation processors. Going forward, it looks like the models with desktop processors might be the only ones to upgrade CPUs, as the other models are now getting phased out that had upgradable 4th generation processors. Motherboards aren't upgradable like a desktop motherboard, where you could just pick another one that fits your case and go. They are generally going to be made for specific models.

But, Clevo does give more options for upgrades compared to a lot of other companies. On a lot of models you can get more ram in them, have more SSD / HDD / m.2 options compared to other companies, as well as other options, and they are pretty easy to work on.

As long as it has an MXM GPU slot it should be upgrade-able for years to come. Clevos are pretty much, for the most part, about as upgradeable as a laptop can be.

There's also the cost of upgrading the GPU. A MXM GTX 980M can easily cost >$800 USD, even a GTX 970M can still cost around $600. (you might be able to get it cheaper elsewhere, but not much) I am pretty sure future generations of GPUs will have similar pricing, so it's up to you if it's worth to upgrade the GPU itself, or just get a new laptop.

Honestly, I don't really see why someone would spend $2000+ on a new laptop when they could just spend $600-900 on a GPU - that is definitely the more affordable option. That's like buying a new computer just because you want to upgrade from a 7970 to a GTX 980 TI, it doesn't really make sense to me.

There can be compatibilty issues with the vBIOS. It´s not guaranteed a newer GPU will work in a specific laptop even if it fits physically.
However if its technically possible someone will make it happen, you just might have to do the flashing yourself.

With Prema's BIOSes and vBIOSes, it's quite likely for it to work.
