Any moment now, my m15x refund should hit my account. When it does, I'm going to be purchasing bwhxeon's NP5793 for a hell of a good price.

The machine is already very impressive, but with some of the money left over from my refund, I wouldn't mind tweaking in a few upgrades to improve performance in gaming and multimedia software [Photoshop, Silo, Max]. So my questions are:

    • How much can I upgrade this thing before I start hitting mobo limitations and bottlenecks?
    • What upgrades would you recommend first?
    • In addition to upgrades to the machine, are there any peripherals I should look into? I'm already looking into a gaming mouse, mouse pad, cooling dock, and I'm trying to decide on a sturdy case [aluminum cases are hard to find in 17"]. Anything I missed?
    • For future reference, are there databases [or similar resources] where I can see motherboard<->hardware compatibilities? Or is it something where I just need to keep an eye on the forums and do my homework for each component?

Thanks in advance for your help! :]

    You're almost at the peak....
You can upgrade the HDD to a 320GB 7200RPM..!! (or an SSD)
    Install a BD drive (burner?)....
I don't think you can upgrade the GPU because the the 9800M series have a much higher TDP than the 8800M GTX (which is one heck of a gpu)
And is it coming with the 4956AGN..??

Wow, now that is a fully loaded 5793.

    Most 5796's wont beat that.

You can probably get the 9800M GTX when it comes out... but it might not be worth it since the its probably not going to get more than a 15% performance increase from the already powerful 8800M GTX.

and the HDD can go 500GB 5400rpm or 320GB 7200rpm, like said above.

Gophn, suppose I wanted to buy a 500GB 5400RPM drive.... and I would sell my 320GB 5400RPM one (since there's only one slot in this laptop), how much would I get for it ? And how much would that drive cost me ?

That is about the limit for that machine except for hard drive, either size or speed. That is the latest GPU engine out right now... I don't think you need to do a thing to it.

Accessories, BT mouse and KB's are nice... ones on Ebay without the dongles are cheap and you don't need them with the internal BT.

Aluminum cases are cool, so are the pelican style hard cases, I have one from Storm cases.

For everyone's information, as I posted before, with this model the 8800 GTX is the 9800 GT. The 9800GTX is just a $512 MB upgrade (to 1GB), so it isn't something to consider... you have it all!!!

    Good buy!

Just curious, but the 9800M GTX has about twice the power consumption as compared to that of the 8800M GTX, so won't that pose problems..??

Its a little pricey at the moment since its so new.

But you can score a 500GB 2.5" 5400rpm drive for around $220-230 USD.

    Here is a quick search:

    is that a typo? ;)

    Hitachi 5K500 Dimensions:
    0.49" Height x 2.76" Width x 3.94" Depth

There will be more 500GB 2.5" drives coming soon, so I would wait for those so that the pricing would be better.

Only the Samsung fits as far as I know at this time. If it is 9.5mm you are ok. Just make sure it is not 12.7mm.

    ^^ what justin said. :)

The Samsung (HM500LI) Spinpoint M6 is the first standard 2.5" that should be able to fit in almost all SATA notebooks.

The Hitachi is a bit thicker.

In either case, the drives are fetching around $220... so hold off on them until they get cheaper.

The 9800 GT is the 8800 GTX in the 570-TU. I was told (and I have asked this many times) the 9800 GTX is nothing more than 512 MB more RAM (for a total of 1 GB). People are looking on the internet and getting information and then (rightfully so) confused when they see that same GPU designation in this model. If the 9800 GTX comes out, and it differs substantially from the 9800 GTX spec's you find elsewhere... I think they borderline have a problem.

Yeah, I meant height (or depth, whatever :D)

The 320GB 5400RPM HDDs have a height of 9.5mm, so presumably their slots will only support 9.5mm HDDs..!! And the only 9.5mm 500GB 5400RPM HDD is the Samsung HM500LI..!!

I think the 9800M GTX has a consumption of ~70W whereas the 8800M GTX ~35W, and the 9800GT of ~60W something....So swapping the 9800M GT/GTX with the 8800M GTX won't cause any problems..??

-.-' would you quit posting that already there is no such thing as a laptop gpu that has a 70w tdp. Quit looking at notebookcheck for your information it won't get you anywhere.
