This place has some great posts to read about laptops in general. I was very close to purchasing an Alienware M17 but I'm glad I sat down and did my homework. I think I read every thread I found here about the Sager 9262 and Xoticpc.com.

I just purchased a fully loaded Sager 9262 from Xoticpc.com this week. I was really happy to find out that the people from Sager were very nice, extremely helpful, and easy to communicate with.

I'm a photographer using Nikon gear, mostly a d700 camera and those files take up space fast. I'll be using a lot of Photoshop and Lightroom. I shoot a bit for iStockphoto.com. I also will be using this box for Cubase 5, multimedia creation via silverlight and the Microsoft Expression Studio, and software development projects mostly .Net web based SQL applications.

The occasional game or two would be nice. I've always been a big fan of the CoD series.

I am curious how quiet will this laptop be? This will replace my current Alienware workstation (two old xeons from 2006) which sounds like you are sitting in a jetliner just before take off. I am pretty tired of hearing that box and it was terrible for recording. I stuck the workstation in the garage and I could still hear it through the wall.

Here is the 9262 I bought...

This box will connect to a MOTU 828 mkii firewire audio interface and then to a host of other musical gear, waldorf q, novation, access, etc and it's going to be 64 bit vista home (drivers willing).

    Welcome to the forums ;)

Just a technical point, you'll probably get better/quicker responses if you rename your thread to something like "How quiet is the Sager 9262?".

I've never had any experience with the Sagers, but you can bet it'll be substantially quieter than the screamer you've got =D

Don't forget to clean the vents every now and again ;)

I've gotta say, sounds like a sweet rig man, congrats! - with those specs though, you'd BETTER play the occasional game, or it's like getting a Veyron and just putting around town =P

Congrats on your purchase! Isn't it always nice to do your homework? Also, how much was that rig you bought, anyways?

Dragunov-21 - Thanks for switching the title, good points.

The laptop runs $3,982.01 but it seems they don't have the port replicator in stock so they are refunding that bit. Can anyone recommend a replacement port replicator for a 9262? You will certainly get more for you money at Xoticpc.com than you will at Alienware/Dell.

Now I just have to wait to get it. I hate waiting.

I own a Sager np9262 and it is very quiet even when gaming. It has one of the best designed cooling systems out there with three oversized fans. My idle GPU temp is 40-41C and it never has exceeded 75C for any of the games I have. There is a manual high speed fan mode that can be turned on if desired and it is somewhat audible but not too objectionable. I have never found a reason to use the high speed fan mode yet.

Same here, very quiet(again except under full load) and it really does have the best cooling for any 17" SLI laptop.

Thanks Loggie and Ikas this is exactly what I was hoping to hear!! I don't think I could have made a better choice. I almost went with a single gpu to reduce heat but I figured if it is too loud I could always remove one of the cards.

Pretty exciting, but I think I have about a 2 week wait for this box. That should give me plenty of time to backup and retire the old jetliner.

My Sager NP9262 with the fans on normal is frighteningly quiet. I mean it's funny to go from max fans for a few hours, then to silence. I like the fans when I'm alone. The noise is nice :p.

That machine will most certainly not let you down at all. It will blow your mind. Enjoy it!

yep my sager is pretty quiet idling.. only gets a lil bit loud when the fans kick in. if your doing intensive tasks like playing games, suggest you put the fans in high.. Fn+1...

by the way if anyone knows does the sager have a built in temp alarm..that beeps when it overheats.. coz mine seems to be beeping.. its sounds like the battery low alarm except my battery is fully charged.??

Any pattern to the beeps? It could be just about anything such as a KBD buffer overflow. Are there any other indications that it might be overheating, such as from temp-monitoring software?

yep.. it comes on without fail at 720am.. it sounds like the battery low alarm.. goes on for the same duration too.. then stops then starts again. after about 4 times doing this it stops beeping completely. only started happening in the last 2 months or so. have had this laptop since feb last year.

yep running a temp monitoring program too and temps hovering around the 61 degree celcius mark..

Are you sure that isn't your alarm clock, and you hitting the snooze button 4 times? :D

It could also still be the battery alarm; the controllers and whatnot on those things can be a bit iffy at times, and even if the battery control panel shows that all is well, it still may not be. If you're really bored and want a quickie education on laptop batteries, take a look at the materials at the Battery University (I kid you not).
