I have been reading this forum for half a year now and have ordered the x7200 so finally feel like I can join.

Here is the problem. I ordered the x7200 a month ago as of this Wed. The machine is apparently built but has been caught up in a series of mobo recalls (there is a second one happening now) which I only found out through this forum. I have been annoyed at the wait time and lack of communication so wish to terminate my order. I have waited through this mobo recall for the last 3 weeks and wish not to wait any further.

Here is the problem. Sager says to cancel at this point since the machine is built will be subject to a 15-30% ‘restocking’ fee.

Wait... 15-30% on $3300 is almost 1000 bucks!

I am dealing with Sager through a reseller who is very reputable on this site and will not mention them so not to tarnish their name.

If they would send me the laptop there is no problem. However I don’t know if this recall will end tomorrow or another month! Add to that I have not agreed to wait the extra recall time, I was told when purchasing I would get the laptop after about 2 weeks.

Does anyone have experience with this?

    Regards

This is strange. I thought that when buying online there would be more option to cancel.

Why are you contacting Sager directly? Order issues should be handled through the retailer from which you are purchasing the machine. Unless I'm misunderstanding you, in which case I apologize.

That is strange indeed. I believe a number resellers allow for cancellations up till the point that the laptop is at shipping, especially if they are reputable. And yes, you should contact your reseller, not Sager directly.

The Sager NP7280 (Clevo x7200) OR the Sager NP7280 S-1 does not have a restocking fee at all. If you would cancel your order you have FULL credit or a refund coming... :)

Good to hear. This is all through my Reseller rep as I have never contacted Sager directly (read in this forum it wasn't advisable).

I have been saving up to buy the x7200 since it's debut and have wanted one badly!

Even though I am dealing with a reseller, they still have to deal with Sager so really it's like I am dealing with Sager through someone else. So is this restocking fee coming from Sager?

Sager doesn't have a cancellation fee, so it must be your reseller who is charging you.

Interesting, they made it seem the restocking fee was coming straight from Sager.

I hope the mobo revisions have been real too! They do have a large sum of my money.

If you paid by credit card, you could dispute the charge, especially since it's apparently been more than 30 days and you don't have what you ordered.

Your situation is very similar to mine! I ordered the NP7280 on 03/18/11 and I'm still waiting for it to ship. After not hearing anything for a long time, I contacted my reseller and was informed that there were motherboard complications, and that Sager and Clevo are working on resolving the issue as soon as possible.

I'm disappointed that I had to contact my reseller in order for them to tell me this information (and in fact, their webpage still shows the laptop as in stock), but unfortunately, the NP7280 is the fastest laptop you can currently buy. That leaves me with the choice of either waiting some more, or cancelling my order and getting something not as powerful. I am opting to wait.

It's interesting that you mention that there was more than one motherboard recall. I thought this most recent one was the only one.

Hmm..If they ordered with CC, they shouldn't have been charged yet though, since it hasn't shipped.

If you aren't able to come to an amicable agreement with the reseller, the very last resort is a chargeback.

If you go the chargeback route (AGAIN, A LAST RESORT), understand that this will certifiably pi$s off the seller, and you will need to make sure you have your ducks lined up as far as their communication of build/ship/delivery dates and the seller's terms and conditions/disclosures, as your card provider usually requires backup for any chargeback claim. If they have a clause that says that their build/ship/delivery dates are only estimates, you might be hosed. Sellers have the opportunity to refute chargebacks and unscrupulous ones have been known to make false claims (as have buyers experiencing buyers remorse) so that you can be rebilled.

If you go the chargeback route and their sale terms & conditions are spelled out and you agreed to it, you'll have a hard time. To successfully chargeback you need to be able to prove that they defaulted on the terms of the sale.

I dont know what the US equivalent is, but in the UK we have Distance Selling Regulations which specifically state charging a re-stocking fee is not allowed.

Simply call you credit card company and block the charge. They cannot charge a restock fee for something that isn't even in stock to sell.

They charged my card the instant I placed the order.

I wasn't pleased either I had to find out about the mobo update through my own digging and again this second hold came through my own digging. I was told the machine was built last week and could ship at any moment but this week it's held up with that second mobo hold.

Let me guess, you're in Canada dealing with an unscrupulous seller. Are you sure this particular seller isn't dealing directly with Clevo instead of Sager and that their name isn't Eurocom?

No I've been reading this forum long enough to watch Euro torpedo their own reputation. Despite saying Sager could still tack on a 30% restocking fee they have been alright.

After today I should know if I get a full refund. I am shipping out to a job soon anyways. So not receiving this week would be useless to me. Besides I would rather sit out and see what is involved with this update that no one knows about.

Just for the record I ordered the x7200 in the ATI S-1 configuration with windows and a backpack.

You are looking at this the wrong way.

We share details about resellers, because it helps other potential buyers navigate the stream of deciding who is best for them.

Would you want someone else to unknowingly step into the same situation you're in now?

There's only two who you could be talking about anyway.

Precisely. A good company, with reputable customer service should be willing to step up to the plate and take action to resolve any customer dispute. It's not the customer's job to maintain a seller's reputation.

Well they say I am getting a full refund now and mailing a cheque. I couldn't be happier, who knows how long this delay will go on for.

When I heard the 30% fee and "it's in the terms you agreed too" I got flashbacks of the "human centipad" for those of you who watch south park.

The company is Fortnax and after chatting with them it sounds they truly have to put up with a lot of Sager crap to keep their Canadian customers happy. They answered all my e mails within about 15 minutes. Only downside is they should have more options if Sager plans on sitting on my order for another month whether it's built or not.

I was nervous of being screwed but at the end it sounds like they do care about keeping their customers happy. I think this forum is a great place to help protect clevo buyers.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!
Still hope to own a Clevo some day.

I do not understand the reasoning to charge any fee for a order that has not shipped. If a order has not shipped there is definitely no fee that should be assessed. You should get a 100% refund no questions asked.

I'm happy everything is ok now, the order has been canceled and full refund issued. Even though the company had to cover ~10% of the costs (due to merchant service fees for each transaction in the Customer->Reseller->Sager->Reseller->Customer chain), and the delay is technically beyond our control (or even Sager's for that matter), we are happy to be able to fulfill the customer's wish and will continue doing our best for total customer satisfaction. We will always be happy to have you back if you decide to order from Fortnax again. :)

    Thank You

May I make a suggestion? I know that resellers are under the whim of Sager/Clevo, but what is under their control is notifying the customer of delays. I'm pretty sure most people would not mind waiting as much if they knew what was going on with their order. Given the high prices of some of these laptops, we do not like feeling like we threw our money into a black hole.

I am still very disappointed that I had to initiate contact with my reseller in order for them to inform me of the motherboard recall/redesign. When I ordered the laptop on 3/18/11, there was no indication anywhere that the laptop would not ship in an expedient amount of time. I was informed right off the bat that the laptop was backordered with an estimated ship time of early April. I was ok with that despite being slightly annoyed that the website didn't indicate it was backordered. After waiting for several weeks, I received notification that the laptop had been built and was awaiting custom screen installation. However, after the expected ship time slipped by more than a week, I contacted the reseller and was notified there was a motherboard recall. Yet there is NO indication of this anywhere unless you look on these forums.

If I had known that it would take more than two months to get the laptop from the date I ordered it, I wouldn't have placed an order. But since I've already been in it for this long, I might as well keep waiting and hope that this redesign won't take another month.

I can relate to Ranma. I get really nervous after making a large payment and hearing nothing in return. If they were up front about it and said "would you mind waiting another 2-3 weeks, we are currently trying to make your laptop better" than no problem! But you can only wait so long past the deadline.

I think you are in for at least another month of waiting though.

Thing is, if you go through CC, you should not be charged until the order has shipped, or is at shipping. The merchant might put a hold on your CC before that, but that should be it.

There is a loophole, though - since these machines are "custom orders" you can be charged right away. I had this happen with an HP system I ordered. I was able to cancel it, and the company promised to refund me in 5 business days. We're past that point so I've opened a dispute with my CC company.
