I recently spilled some water on my laptop. Thankfully the system is okay, but some of it got inside the left hinge and now it creaks when opening the lid.
I’m thinking of taking off the LCD bezel and squirting some Tri-Flow lubricant on both ends of the hinge mechanism. Is this a good idea?

I'd take it apart and examine the hinge, clean any corrosion and then re-lubricate.

WD-40! Jokes, aside. Could it be that its the plastic parts that cause this noise? Else take a cotton swab, dip it into some rubbing alcohol an try getting in those hard to reach spots.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I applied a few drops of Tri-Flow to the hinge and now it's dead silent. I guess whatever small amount of pre-applied lube that was there must've evaporated during my cleanup process after the spill, which included a hair dryer and keeping the laptop in a heated room for 24h.

Yes sounds like you you cleaned it out fully at least. Don't want anything sitting in there.

Never would have considered chain lube for a laptop hinge, but if it works it works!

Yeah Tri-Flow is great stuff. Been using it around the house in additional to bicycle components for years. Also smells great too.
It's more of a low-medium viscosity dry Teflon lube, so good for getting into small moving parts, with two kinds, the normal version and a dry version. The dry version leaves a wax-like film when it evaporates, which is designed to keep exposed parts cleaner in dry/dusty conditions, but for laptop hinges that are used indoors and hidden behind plastic I'm not too keen on that, so I used the normal version.Papusan likes this. -

So long as it's kept in a reasonable environment that's ideal
