I am an audiophile and would like to buy an expensive DAC and hook it up to my p170hm, I wonder if the spdif out and optical out on the p170hm is of good quality to justify spending 1000$ + DAC on it? thanks y'all~~

it's a digital out. Unlike analog, you either get the signal or you don't, there fore, there is no "quality". So, it's good quality. Just make sure you set spdif out as the default in windows, keep the windows mixer out of play.

Quality will depend on the receiver and speakers you have on your stereo system and how well the file you're playing was encoded.

As mentioned it's digital so it either gets there or it doenst
