Guys this has been bothering me for a long time and I dont know what to do. The GPU gets way too hot no matter how many times I repaste the thermal compound and I think this is the reason. Can anyone please help me fix this issue because the design of the heat sinks are not alligned with the fans properly. What can I do?

Get some foil tape and seal it off. This has been discussed at length in this thread.

Edit: I didn't see that you already used foil but that thread may still help. Also, are you confident you are applying the TIM correctly? Lastly, what temps are you seeing?

40c is not an issue, mine idles around 37c. What are the temps under load. Can you give them to us?

Yeah, I'd like to know the temperatures under load as well. Also, propping up the back of the computer can help with air flow and reduce the temps a few degrees if you haven't tried that.

The laptop is built in that way, - unless you want to overclock a mod is not needed at all. Does your GPU throttle? If not, I would not do anything about it. My ATI 7970 idles around 48-54 celcius. My old 4-year old laptop idled at 56 celcius

Yeah, even the 9170's are built like that but it hasn't been much of an issue to me with both the 7970m or the 680m.

    Nadizo,
The foil mod does help lower the temp a few degrees and slows the rate at which the temp increases but isn't necessary as long as you have a good paste job. You can read my three TIM test in my signature if you think it will help.
