be great if u could do a special review on the changed backing plate and cooling solution... apparently the new 3rd fan hole is empty and a passive intake atm... possible mod job for extra cooling

I needed something smaller for my next contract which I leave for at the end of the month. I was going to buy a m15x and give alienware a second chance till they screwed around with me even more, I finally just got my return back on my m9750 after more than a month.... So I just couldn't bring myself to buy an alienware at that point. I then decided to go with the M571RU-U since I already had a processor and then a few days later this week it was announced another sale was going to happen for the gateway again. -.-' I would have bought the gateway again except I already bought a barebone laptop. So at this point I'm kind of stuck with it, but I'm sure I'll be happy since it was originally my first choice.

 

so you have two laptops with an 8800..nice! DO i hear 8800m gts vs. 8800 gtx comparison ?

 

btw im not sure how the gateway was in person but the silver clevo is NICE ...and so damn upgradeable & modeable...you'll love it man!

That`s a lot of money involved dude ...I mean you probably already paid over 2.5k dollars, so are you tossing in another 1k? seems steep...

 

No, it's not. That's not an upgrade.
1. Turbo Memory is already supported. You're not trying to replace it.
2. TV Tuner? I though that Turbo Memory and the TV Tuner can't be fitted both at the same time.
3. Obviously you can put a new HDD, but that's not quite an upgrade.
4. The CPU is supported with the new motherboards, yet not an upgrade since it's not even a different generation (came with Santa Rosa)

An upgrade is when a new CPU comes out (different generation, refresh, whatever) and if you put it inside it actually works. Same goes for a video card. The only Clevos that support the 8800M officially are the M57xRU-U (according to Clevo's page), without a new motherboard (basically 5792/5793). Same may go for the Penryns.
You actually make a point when you prove someone wrong and up until now I haven't really seen an upgradeable laptop (HDD and RAM doesn't count since these are the only two standards that are respected by manufacturers; no one will build them custom HDDs and RAM cards). You can "upgrade" to a better CPU from the same generation, more RAM, bigger (or faster) HDD and that's it. Now prove me wrong.

yeas bit the new penryn, and extreme works, im just going with the cheapeast... yes hdd isnt an upgrade like the cpu's i have metioned but its an iprovement,.....yes tv tuner and robson both..somewhat like your double-headed P-shooters!....Yes and if 9series is an improvemenr(and I will be the first to say it wont be untill something quite capable) should fit the 8800 slot as it will be smaller die....but go ahead swarzenegWood and shoot me down and destroy the much added hope i have for the upgrades i soon to implement....though go ahead ..i think i have a noose and dead dog somewhere.... does having teeth matter???

 

According to this, replacing a T7500 (for example) with a T7700 (for example) is an upgrade.
Same goes for 8700M --> 8800M.
Hence, the laptop is upgradeable.

I think you have to think your statements through a bit, before you make them FTB.
The fact that there are some things about Clevo you don't like, doesn't mean you should respond negative to everything that's being said.
And, while it's true TS shouldn't get his hopes up about upgrading the 8800M to a 9x00M, or upgrading his CPU to the new Montvale (for example), he can still upgrade his laptop to whatever is currently available.

 

naticus, the only snag is that you cannot have both Turbo memory AND the TV Tuner. There is only one mini-PCI slot available for them so you have to choose one or the other.

 

I was just going to say that.
1. naticus, I tend to be down to Earth. I will be very glad for you if you will be able to make a 9800M GTX work in this Clevo when it's going to be released. Honestly. I would even admit I'm an idiot.
2. Kwakkel, now, honestly, what if I were to modify that Wikipedia page? Yes, I understand what you're trying to say, but it makes sense that you can do that, since it's nothing new. Sure, upgrading to Montvale isn't quite possible, since there's only Montevina and I believe that it will require a new motherboard (hence the no upgrade). How do you know I don't like Clevos? Have I ever said that? I have some things I don't like about them, but that would be it. I love the way this M57xRU-U looks like, appreciate the price and build and I even consider getting one later on this year, but I don't have anything against Clevos.

I should be banned for off-topic. Anyone against? All in favor...

FTB: just to straighten things out: I never said you didn't like Clevo. I said exactly what you confirmed: that there are some things you don't like about Clevo

Montvale is a new Itanium release (I told you I picked a silly example ), so you can bet on it that such an upgrade will be impossible

And you can go adapt Wikipedia all you want .. I can find another source if you prefer
