Sorry to tell you this but this laptop only accepts 1st Gen cpus and you bought a 2nd Gen.
I think the best graphics card you can get is a gtx 680m, someone correct me if I'm wrong

Unless I am mistaken 2820qm wont work in that its a 1st Gen i7 system.

I am not familiar with the system but it originally came with 280m as one of the available options, and while I may definitely be wrong here most of the time laptops of that era capped out around 680m or so. Usually had something to do with Sound not working / IRQ conflicts with later cards

To be frank you might've been better off with anything else especially for VR development. Something like a m6700 are pretty cheap.

    CPU? sure

980m GPU? nope 7970m is the max on that machine and only certain versions at that.

    M6700 works with the m5000m / 980m

m6600 is a solid machine in principle just limited for its capability due to the bios it has, m6700 is much better in that regard.

You will likely need to mod .inf but otherwise should work (980m)

m5000m does, its just the Quadro version of the 980m.

This is a link with information concerning using the GTX 980m with the Precision M6800. Aaron has made the M5000M (Which in my opinion is a better Quadro labeled version of the GTX 980m) work fine on his M6700 and presents a very detailed look at how he did it here.
