its a problem that will never go away
one thing i would point out is that Dx11 games are miles away, i would be surprised if a well optimised dx11 game hit us within a year to 18 months
But if i was even contemplating the new Crysis or GTA 5 then i would be looking at GT300 series, however by then i might be buying a new laptop as for the cost of changing the cards and the difficulty selling mobile cards it might be easier just to change the laptop![]()

Well even though SLI is pretty impressive in a laptop, an i7 is even more impressive in my opinion. I think that SLI for the games I play is over kill and I will be happy with the i7 and just one very good GPU.

We'll I'll see you in the owners lounge then! looking forward to see what your machine can do once you decide!
-
well considering that none of those games support quad or i7 cpu's that would seem like a colossal waste.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Agreed. The amount of money that Jack_of_Blades is willing to put in for top shelf hardware, but with only mid tier games to play them on is a bit of a waste. A single powerful GPU and a P9700, or mobile quad at the most, is all he needs.

He's insistent on buying an I7... I have been trying to convince him for nye on 11 pages... at this point I say let him make his own decision, I've share as much as I can
-
sounds like he is looking for justification for this decision
although if you have doubt dont buy it then come to us and say i brought the wrong thing -
aww man did i get here too late? haha. was reading 11 pages worth of stuff
just my 2 cents:
since you're going for up to 5 LAN sessions a month, why not just get the laptop and save the whole trouble of bringing a desktop + Screen around, since both are gonna give you FPS that'll most probably look the same to your eyes.
since you know sli is an overkill for the games you play, one gpu would be enough wouldn't it?and the i7, imho is just totally sexy. LOL. but speaking performance wise, its a great cpu to begin with, and the list just goes on. heating issues on this thing isn't much of an issue since it goes to the range of 90s when overclocked like MAD but running on stock settings, clevo has done a good job keeping the thing cool.
that being said, all you need for your LAN sessions = laptop + mouse + (keyboard?) + PSU + lots of food. that's basically all. why bother carrying extra DVI/VGA cables around, a screen and its psu?
and just to let you know, my current setup is still going strong with its 1-year-ago specs.*pats*

Both the GTX 280M and P9700 or Q9xxx are overkill for his games. Rather, let me rephrase. The GTX 280M and P9700 or Q9xxx are more than enough to run all of his games smoothly and any future games that he wishes to play. He doesn't need the desktop i7 or a chunky thick laptop. A M860TU or M570TU will fit the bill just fine.

I think I am going to order the D900F... IMO its the right decision. And that list is just some of the games that I play. I have no want or desire to play Crysis but I may play games like COD Modern Warfare 2, Farcry 2, Doom 5 etc. Like I keep saying I want to have to power to play current games and play future games. I don't want to get an underpowered laptop and in 6 months have to get a new one because it can't handle the next set of games.

This has been a long discussion and in it I totally forgot to list what I am actually going to be using the laptop for. Yes, majority gaming but also other things like:
Web surfing, watching movies (Blu-Ray), music, etc. Doesnt the M9850 have a better screen the the D900F?
And the lowest game (GPU) wise that I will play will probably be Diablo II and the highest (right now) will probably be Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. -
We will not rationalize your decision to go with an i7 or even SLI... You really could build both a lappy and desktop for that money...
-
the m980 has a bigger screen if that is what your asking, from what i have seen/read of it they are stunning screens
Tbh i think you have made a mistake
you do nothing that needs an I7 but alot that would benefit from SLI
simple as that
next thread -
And whats the point of getting an I7 with a 280m... in EVERY situation the 280m is going to be the deciding factor of whether or not you can get a good framerate (which you'll easily be able to).
Sure... its bragging rights.. but its like me bragging that I got a space shuttle in my garage, but it has an engine from a Prius... -
You can brag with a nonfunctional shuttle coz you won't be launching a working one either.
Sov your Haruhi avatar made me go back and watch the entire series again today :L I felt commanded. -

Just let him do what he wants. It's his money to blow off. We told him everything he needs to know about spending money wisely based on his wants. Jack_of_Blades. Come back here after you purchased your D900F so I can laugh at you after you realize that you should have gone with the M570TU.
-
Did not bother with 2nd season. But watching full Haruhi makes Lucky Star even better.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
It may be worth watching after KyoAni churns out the last of the "endless eight." I heard Lucky Star is good. But I'm still not going to watch that garbage. I will haunt you for the rest of your time of ownership of the D900F if you choose to get it.
-
Bah if you enjoyed MoHS there's no reason to call LS garbage.
-
Endless Eight is just so boring and I loved the first season! And no offense but I didnt like lucky star either.
-
he just wants bragging rights for having an I7 in a laptop
It will not help gaming in the slightest the GPU is still the most important feature, which he is ignoring
I wont bother with this thread anymore -
What comes to i7 processors in laptops, personally I'd just wait until the actual laptop versions come out. At the moment even a Q9000 is enough for pretty much anything, and a desktop i7 is just simply bad for power (meaning if one would want low-ish power use). For me my gaming laptop plan is as much for the lower power use as it is for the mobility. At the moment the 260M and Q9000 would be optimal price-performance-wise, but seeing as my purchase will be delayed until at least January, who knows what's the situation at that time.
I'll say this much though. For non-gaming use, any sort of i7 system one builds today will last for ages, since the CPU power is simply way beyond what most things need. For gaming use, you need to have the ability to update the GPU, but that aside the system is good to go for ages as well (as the GPU is the limiting factor by far). I'm not sure how far this i7 laptop can be upgraded in the future GPU-wise, but I imagine for a good while.
As such, I wonder how long it'll take for the mobile i7 CPUs to hit the shelves, and how reasonable the price will be. Even if a Q9000-based laptop would last for many years, an i7... damn, I wouldn't have to change for a long, long time
(Sorry for rambling and perhaps going a bit off-topic, I'm too tired)

I understand what everyone is saying and no I am not just trying to blow close to 4 grand just for "bragging rights". I can get an awesome laptop for gaming that will last me a few years or get a good laptop that will last me 6 months to a year. I want a quaility gaming laptop and yes the games I play aren't that much GPU demanding but what if in the near future a really demanding GPU game is released that catches my eye and I don't have enough power because I decided to be "cheap". i7 and SLI in a laptop are bragging rights but saying that I am going to get the laptop just so that I can say that I have it is not true. Honestly I do like that Bestbuy G71 but it does not have a blu-ray player and that is something that I really want in my laptop.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The i7 alone is bragging from your gaming tier. Just get a mobile CPU and a single top shelf GPU for half the price. You will have the ability to replace the GPU in the future. $4,000 can get you the absolute fastest desktop money can buy and still have leftovers for a decent ~$2,000 gaming laptop.

Which would you recommend?
-Also I liked that G71 however, it didn't have a blu-ray player. Are there any of that model that can have a bluray player? Thanks. -

Which G71 are you looking at? Do you have a link?
-
if you are a gamer get the m980 regardless of what games you need
by the time the qx9300 stuggles the mxm3 socket will be stuffed anyway
it really is that simple, we cant make it any simpler for you -

However, I am turned away because of the lack of Blu-Ray. Xotic PC has a different Asus G71 http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g71gxa1-order-p-2591.html
I dont like the Red on the Xotic PC one. Which doesnt make sense because I have seen All Black ones. -
well newegg just got their versions of the g51's here (much better than BB's and cheaper than xotics) so i would assume that if you wait a bit newegg will also add the g71's to their stock too.

I have no need for writing Blu rays... I thought about it but I dont think there is a need for it, not for me anyways.
-
-
The BB one is a base model unit, somewhat different than what the resellers have to offer. I had it for a few days but it turned into a lemon on me. Which is a shame because it was a huge bang for the buck.
-
right but the ones on newegg are much better and are even priced better.

I only want to read blu rays so I can watch blu ray movies on my laptop. I dont want to pay extra for the writer if I dont have to.
I can't decide...
