OK so after many days of shopping and fights with my wife (I lost), we finally settled on a laptop. Finalized my order today on the aforementioned laptop. Did I do well or did i just spend 2500 on a machine that will ultimately dissapoint me?
kneels and prays

I think it is a bad timing to get np5793, you should wait for half month and get the 5794 for similar price.

Crap. I ordered from sagers website. And I just configured a laptop thats a little bit faster (see above) for less money from pcmicroworks.com. However ive never heard of them before this thread. sigh.....guess im cancelling my order and switching over. Im telling my wife its your fault. Seriously I can use all the help I can get in this laptop world. Im a desktop geek from the 8086 days. Any other ideas? Sager wont process my order for another 2 days b/c of the weekend holiday. -
Sorry for the quintiple spacing. Go Red Wings!
-
Sager might be willing to pricematch if you contact them.
I know their resellers (like XoticPC) will do it. -
A suggestion for the future. Ask people on the forums before buying not your wife. Talk to your wife at the end. Like when it arrives.
-
Its not bought. Sagernotebooks wont process the orders on weekends so its sitting in a pending status. Ive sent two emails and left a callback message to cancell the order. And I have posted and asked on a few forums. I just bumped into this one today that mentioned pcimicroworks. Xoticpc's price difference was negligible.
-
Negliblie, but they have free 3 yr labor warranty
-
Side note: I was doing good until this evening by not buying a dell, alienware or some other major brand. And theres no way im ever going back to ibuypower or cyberpowerpc for anything.
-
It is not that Dell, Alienware, and other major brands do not make decent or even great systems. They do have quality issues from time to time as do some of the smaller companies. The problem for me comes down to support when I do have a problem and that is where I find that the smaller companies and even more so the resellers have better support (there are exceptions).
Most of the major players have off shored their support and are more concerned with corporate customers than home / smb.
You find resellers who add value add support like Xotic and from what I am seeing lately PC Microworks and that only adds to the value of your system. Not to mention the price points for high end laptops.
As to the waiting for the 5794, I thought about that as well. Unfortunatly I do not have the luxury of waiting, not to mention there is no guaranty that it will be released even by the end of June. I also do not like buying 0 rev systems, even with Clevo's quality there will likely be bugs. I used to work as a field service engineer and have very rarely seen 0 rev systems not have some sort of problems. There is just no way that even the best QA can catch every potential issue until released in mass. -
clintre, I think there was an exception - IBM, back to the day when they still sell PCs. I've never seen any bugs on their systems, and their CS were superior.
-
-
Clintre makes a great point. Not only is waiting a half month likely to net you nothing considering the 5794 is unlikely to come that soon but it will be a rev 0 system as clintre mentioned and likely to have bugs. I say the only way its a good purchase is if you are going to wait another 4 months or so. Moreover by then we'll get 9800M benches to see what it can do.
-
Although we do need some people to buy and get the bugs worked out so that I can feel comfortable buying myself one.
-
Lol!!!!!!!
-
Its not really the CS that im worried about. I feel more than comfortable handling most software and hardware issues myself provided its not some obscure problem. Its the fact that I can build the same laptop at dell or alienware and have to pay $500 more. Its always about money when you have to share it with your spouse. It was hard enough to justify buying a gaming rig. But now I have to consider upgradeability (1 word). Will the motherboard I buy be SLI enabled? Can I add the additional card later or will the board support any future cards? Or is it buy as is and hope that the games dont jump beyond my system specs within the next 1-2 years. A laptop is a very frustrating purchase.
-
579x doesn't support SLI. 8800m gtx will last you at least 3 years, after that you will need to use med settings I believe. you can upgrade your GPU later if they are same format/requirement.
and welcome to the notebook world. -
Probably a bit longer than 3 years. I don't think we'll see the truly nextgeneration of graphics tech for 4-5 years where we'll have new tech from Crytek and maybe epic. During this period there will just be refining of what we have now. Although the Crysis graphics patches that will come in a couple years time we'll probably kill the 8800M GTX.
-
I have to sleep on this. This 24/hr on call crap is killing me. Clear head, start fresh tomorrow. And by tomorrow of course I mean today. I wonder if my old SSi games will run on the 8800 gtx? Does it come with a 5 1/4 drive? I hope so.....sleeps
-
ummmm no ... lol.. you cant find any new notebook with a 5.25" drive i hope you were joking, i didnt read the last page but yeah hope you are joking
-
Im refreshed. Yes of course i am joking. Although Curse of The Azure Bonds was the greatest.
-
Ok so now my question is. A standalone 8800gtx or the duel sli enabled 8800gtx platform?
I finally made a deicsion.
