I could have gotten the gateway P-6831FX with GeForce 8800 GTS and added a Penryn cpu but i would have been stuck at 1440x900.

Which site are you referring to ? XoticPC ? Or Eurocom ? Does Eurocom have a student discount ? If so, how much ?

The only way I can see getting the 8800 for less than $2k is if you order it without an OS and use a discount that not everyone has available, which doesn't really count in my book. When I look at the Eurocom M571RU base config and only select the 8800 as an option (no OS, no wireless, etc) the price is $1935 w/o shipping. So I guess it technically can be done but I don't find it terribly worthwhile to think in those terms.

    well i got mine with
no OS ( i got one from other places.. ;) )
I did get wireless (intel a/b/g)
    lowest c2d (upgrade later)
highest GPU ( maybe upgrade later)
    160gb HDD 5400rpm (upgrade later)
    2GB ram (upgrade later)
1440x900 res ( anything higher is hard on my young eyes!)

if you buy the cheapest now, then upgrade later through newegg or tigerdirect, you can save SO much money in the long run. But to each his own.
