I've had my Sager NP2090 for about a year now. For the past week or so, my computer would occasionally freeze. Well, first the screen would distort, then it would freeze. I'd restart it and it'd usually be good for a day or two. About two days ago, it happened. When I turned it off and on again, it wouldn't start. There'd be gray lines going up and down the screen the moment you turn it on. So I'm pretty sure it's the mobo, mostly because my friend's dell did the same thing and when he called Dell they told him it was a mobo thing that'd be covered under warranty.
I'm about 8 months out of warranty. So I'm going to have to get it fixed out of warranty, does anyone know if this is a common issue on the Compal IFL90? And does anyone know how much it'll cost to fix? I've requested a call back from sager twice and they still haven't called me back yet.

What Graphics Card do you have?
If its an 8400M or 8600M, its probably a defective graphics card. WHich can fry the motherboard. It doesnt seem it has done that yet, but your GPU is probably defective. Even though you are out of warranty, there should be an extension for Defective GPU's. Call them about it, try to get them to fix it, they should. -
That's such a relief. I was really hoping that it'd just be the Gpu. And yeah it's an 8600 gt. Now that I think about it, when I turn it on, the screen breaks up into like 12 images of the screen. So how do I go about asking if they'll fix it. Or better question, how do I even know it's a defective gpu?

well an easy way to test is buy a new one and stick it in and if it works then your GPU has problems =)
i guess (keyword) another way to make sure your computer is still working is turn up your speakers really high and then log in blind, if you can hear the login music, you are good? -
Oh my god does sagers customer service suck. I've requested two call backs and still have gotten nothing. Does anyone else have experience with them?
-
yeah. i thought sagers customer service from the phone call to receiving my laptop back was pretty good.

When the motherboard on my 570TU fried (my manufacturer said it was due to undervolting, I didn't even know you could fry a motherboard by undervolting) , I didn't get anything at all on the screen. Completely black. And I couldn't hear the login music either.

Well I called and asked for an RNA. If it's the video card it looking to be about $350 parts, labor and shipping. But if it's the mobo, which I'm hoping it's not and which the guy said it's probably not, then it's gonna be about 600ish.
I asked if they would replace it for free if it turned out that it was a defective gpu but they said no because I was out of warranty. Which I think is a really crappy deal because if it turns out that it was their crappy product I don't think I should have to pay.
Anyways, my advice for anyone looking to buy a laptop is to buy it from XoticPC.com. It is just by far the best customer service I have ever recieved. I wish I had gotten the warranty from them because that would have meant that I wouldn't have had to deal with sager. I mean they're really not so bad once you get them on the line but to get them there is just a pain. If it weren't for Justin from XoticPC I would still be waiting for their phone call. He actually called them and asked them to call me back. So yeah, xotic of is just fantastic considering that I was out of warranty. -
did you tell them that if it is a defective gpu, then nvidia should warranty it to them, the moron on the tech support line might not have known that
-
Hook it up to an external monitor or TV, and see if you have the same problem to make sure its defective.
Yes, mention to them, that it is defective. -
I am really surprised to hear of your bad experience with Sager customer service. I recently had the spacebar fail on my NP2096 keyboard. I called one of the Sager 800 numbers from the website, asked for tech support, and was connected immediately to one of the Techs. He was very knowledgeable. He sent me a replacement KB and told me to call him back directly if I needed help installing. When I was installing I wasn't sure how to disengage the connector from the Motherboard. So I called him back and he talked me right through it. So far I love the NP2096 and have been very impressed with Sager. I ordered directly from them.
I think the motherboard just fried on my NP2090
