I want to buy a 150SM when I can but I'm clueless about ordering it

I'm not sure where to ask this, but I figured here would be safe.

I'm interested in getting a 150SM when they go up for sale. I've used a Sager NP2096 for the past few years and it's held up very well for the most part, but it is getting old and I want a new laptop for gaming that I can bring to college. I used XoticPC when I bought that, so I'll probably be going with them again.

That being said, I'm really unsure about how these orders go. How long will I have to wait for it to arrive if I order in this initial rush? If I don't order one as soon as they go up and instead do it later in the day, will I have to wait even longer to get it or is there no real hurry? When are these expected to go up for sale, actually?

I might as well ask this as well: I ran into some heating issues with my NP2096, so is it worth spending more money on thermal paste or have those issues been mostly dealt with over the years? I'm also unsure about SSDs- if I get one, I should order that as the primary drive with a regular one as the secondary, right?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    welcome to nbr
as soon as they go on sale we will all know about it worldwide. i think the new models are still under NDA ruling so the suppliers cant talk about them until its lifted, which should be soon (we hope).

on your previous model did you clean the vents and fans out with compressed air on a regular basis as this is the biggest factor for heat problems.

defo go for a ssd and if the above model is a 17" then budget depending you could get 2 ssd's or a secondary standard drive.

Thank you for the link; I don't know how I missed that...

I did clean it out regularly, but at some point it stopped having much of an effect.

Did you open it to clean? Ive had a P150HM for almost two years and untill recently i only cleaned it from the outside, through the vents (I know, I know..) with months apart. A couple of weeks ago it started throttling once a week. External cleaning helped but a week later the problem was there again. I opened it up and did a more thorough cleaning of the fan and vents, no problems since. Didnt even remove the heatsinks (I have no paste or pads).

Yes every few months open it and clean it since they have made it very easy.

Do expect potential order delays with the first glut of orders.

Xoticpc and Mythlogic already have the new models up replacing the older models already :) Xotic still have the P170em and the P150em on there site, I don't think the newer models will be ready yet to ship but I think they are making pre orders.

Most of the new models are in stock and ready go to. You'll see some parts like the 8970M have an ETA of Mid-June so depending on how you configure it there could be a wait. But if the computer or part doenst list that, then its all in stock.

We're also awaiting the 8970M and the P150SM, but the rest of the line is indeed available.

If you intend on using it for gaming or putting a lot of load on the system, then the higher grade thermal compound definitely helps by a few degrees Celsius. Generally, though, the design is good about heat dissipation, and it shouldn't overheat - or even borderline - unless it's faulty. As for the SSD, you nailed it.

Id say if you are confident in doing it yourself then always. But better paste will also last longer without drying.

Sounds like Sager currently has no plans to offer the 150SM just the 157SM as currently listed. The 170SM will be coming though.

We are offering (P150SM) along with the P157SM so you have your choice if you want the plain or not plain version, same as the P17X options

Big mistake on Sager's part. Guess I'll be going MSI this time around.

They may add it some day, maybe if enough people ask for it.

That's really unfortunate, though going by the prices over at Mythlogic, I think I'll be going with the 157SM at Xotic.

The only difference is the appearance, isn't it? I can live with that, I guess. Those hinges scare me a bit, but that's probably just me.

I guess my last question to you guys, then, would be if the i7-4700MQ is a good enough processor to stick with? Thanks for all your help so far!

The 4700MQ is great! It will almost certainly meet your demands. The 4800MQ is a good upgrade for the price, too.

If stock gaming is what you are after the 4700MQ is not going to put you wrong. The 4800MQ is for tweakers and those who have specific needs.

What setup are you getting in full because it may be worth investing the difference in an SSD for instance.

The 4800 would have gone beyond my budget, so it was more of a "is this worth scrounging up some extra money for?" deal. I'm getting a 128GB Crucial M4 SSD as my OS drive already, anyway.

Fair enough, what else are you getting? You plumping for the 780 or going for the 770?
