I'm About Ready to Give Up

16gb ddr 3

AMD 7970M

i7-3820QM

BIOS 1.00.04bLS2





I'm working on this laptop for a friend and it will NOT stay on more than a couple minutes before it shuts down. I have tried everything that i can think of and it still shuts down. Im thinking it some kind of thermal or video card problem but I cant quite narrow it down.



here are the things i have tied:



cleaned/re greased both fans.

cleaned all heat sinks fins

lapped and reapplied thermal paste

reapplied thermal tape to the GPU

replaced CMOS battery

reset CMOS

removed/reinstalled all drivers for iGPU an the 7970

tested all ram in a seperate latop top individually

swapped fans to test headers



After all of this it still will beep about 20-22 times and shut down it is in no way getting hot the fans still spin but the computer still shuts down.

What else can i try ? I can't be the only one who has this problem.

 

I'm not at all a repair expert but I've had a similar problem once with a desktop and it was a faulty PSU. Maybe see if you can find some damaged capacitors near the power input? Also try another adapter.

 

If you feel it is heat related, try downloading HWInfo64 on a flash drive. See if you can get enough up time to install it. Shut down to let cool, and try running it a second time, launch it with sensors and see if you can get a reading on CPU, GPU, and board temps before next shutdown. Also, see if you can get a reading on how much battery time is left.

 

IMHO, definitely try another power cord/adapter.

 

One thing that I forgot to add was I ran this laptop off battery and suddenly the battery got really hot so hot that it hurt to touch it never put it back in since.

Faulty GPU, maybe. Sounds similar to the kind of behavior the system exhibits when the video card is removed; the EC spins the fans up, you get beeping, and then the power is cut.

 

Sounds like something is shorting out somewhere. Until you find out what it is, it is a good choice not to connect that battery back. Li-ion and LiPo batteries can catch on fire if shorted out or if they overheat.

 

My money is on the GPU going bad, 7970ms are dying all over the place these days.

Firstly you have to narrow things down.

- Use HWinfo to check your temps CPU+GPU wise.

- If it's not the temps, disable your dGPU in device manager and let it run on iGPU.

- If it's still shutting down, get a 20 bucks Watt'O'Meter and check power draw. Do you get spikes during use in idle? Is the PSU running hot after normal use?

My personal bet is that you should disable the dGPU in device manager. If it's not shutting down, enable it again and install the latest Crimson driver.
If it's shutting down, your 7970m is dying.

You can get a GTX 970m + P1X0SM heatsink for about 350 €.

My 6990 GPU died in my PH150HM but that just meant a black screen, my computer never beeped or turned off. Plus I managed to revive it by baking it in the oven at 200C for 8mins (don't forget to repaste after, obviously).
