im deciding on the np5793 deal, and i see that they're charging more for Win XP, and i was reading on the OS subforums on how slow Vista was for many people with even new laptops, how does Vista fare with Sager laptops? did you guys notice a little slowness compared with XP for anybody who tried both on similar systems?

Especially since im going to be gaming, i was wondering if theres a detriment to performance?

one more question. i have a Win XP home OEM CD, can i just delete vista if i dont like it in the Sager laptops, and just install XP with all the driver CD's that come with the laptop? and does it come with an OEM Vista CD?

Vista is both superior and inferior to xp.

    1. 4GB of RAM in XP, be it x86 or x64 is not the same as in Vista x86&x64. Vista has better memory allocation and management.
    2. The speed people want from xp is there but it comes at a cost. After 800 MB usage the OS slows down badly. It does not cope with the loads like Vista. It simply takes time to toy with the RAM and pagefile. So the performance you gain for not having aero is lost when you run harcore apps, like your games.

Nobody here hates Vista more than me. I also crossed on XP with my laptop to find that if it comes with Vista and the drivers on the CD are with Vista, it is optimised for that.

    1. On XP, my Vista Asus stuff was rudimentary. Some options did not even work.
    2. Providers offer drivers for XP nowadays as a gift. They are shoved on the website and they are done with them.
    3. Battery management is also different.

    Get Vista Ultimate 32bit
Now with Service Pack 1 i very stable and its good even with SP2 Beta its very stable and good but dont get 64bit and you can Install Windows 7 when they release first public beta in January because its very fast for gaming is the best i use now Windows 7 Pre-Beta for gaming and its 3 times faster than XP and Vista

Well 64 is good for Office, Photoshop, HD Playback, Video processing....it is faster than 32.

I don't know about gaming because my 9300 is crap but maybe someone with a better card can shed some light on this.

Are you ordering directly from Sager or from a re-seller? I know XOTICPC sells this model and they include a standard 3-year warranty. It's also priced at the same $1,499 as on Sager's website- http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np5793-custom-sager-notebook-built-clevo-m570ruu-m571ruu-p-2276.html

As for the O/S, my suggestion is to get a 64-bit version of Vista. It has 4GB of RAM standard, but XP Professional will only be able to recognize/utilize just over 3GB.

To answer your question about the XP Home OEM CD- if it has never been installed on another computer, it could be installed on your new one. If it has been previously used, "Windows Genuine Advantage" will catch it and drive you insane with notifications and possibly reduced functionality. It's a pain.

I personally deal with Vista alot at home/work/school. I dont see ANY problems with it, and in fact enjoy alot of the graphical features. Im not saying its better or worse, but I would not PAY for XP, if you have a choice you might want XP, otherwise I dont think its that necessary.

I think alot of the complaints stem from people just not being used to the new interface. Same with Office '03 VS Office '07 .

Vista has been out a while and alot of the original issues have been fixed.

P.S. Drivers can be a pain in the *** when down/up - grading to XP from Vista.

What is wrong with 64 bit..?

Vista is probably the way to go. 64 bit works fine for me. Some games do run a few FPS slower than in XP, but the constant updating of drivers by ATI and Nvidia is definitely resolving the few problems that remain. That being said, Vista doesn't have any "must have" features that you can't add to XP.

64 bit is faster, more stable and the future. It will use the components in your laptop to its fullest potential. Unlike 32bit that will probably half the performance.

Get a 64bit processor if you want true performance!

I manage both 32 and 64-bit boxes at work, and the 64-bit boxes are much faster, far more reliable and stable, and just as easy to work with compared t a 32-bit box. I don't know what your talking about, gangstaone. I can't hardly read what your saying either. 64-bit drivers are given preferential treatment nowadays compared to 32. And Vista x64 is fully 64-bit, if all your hardware is designed to allow 64-bit communication.

Blue Diamond, in my experience, I'd recommend Vista Home Premium x64. You will not be disappointed.

All core 2 processors are fully 64-bit compatible. If you are purchasing from Sager of Xotic, I believe the come with both 32 and 64-bit on the disk.

64-bit is the best, overall. I only have a 64-bit disk, so I'm not positive how you select 64-bit on a combo disk.

Um, have you seen the date on that article? Its June 2006...

Vista is a completely different OS now compared to then. In fact, it hadn't even hit beta 2 by the time that article was written. Every point in that article does not apply to Vista x64 SP1 as it is now.

And like I said earlier, I run many 32-bit boxes and 64-bit boxes at work, and the x64 systems are far more reliable and faster. (Same hardware)

I too hated Vista...until SP1. That seems to have solved most of the issues that I had. I run Vista Ultimate 64 and I haven't seen any problems at all. If you want future proof, I would go Vista 64 of some flavor.

No, its because Microsoft realizes that most computer users out there are idiots and afraid to upgrade do to rumor, being scared of a new OS, having crappy computers, etc. Not because vista is worthless. Windows 7 does look promising though!

Yes, those Mac ads have done quite a number on the perception of windows computers and vista in general.

Windows 7 will outperform Vista as well as XP and is expected to arrive real soon!
