Just bought a i7 2960xm cpu to my Clevo P150HM but laptop will not boot with the processor. Is the cpu dead or my p150hm not compatible with this processor?

Have to assume it is compatible, as it's the top processor option when configuring a P150hm from Malibal.

A common mistake people make is not turning the "screw" that locks the CPU into place far enough.

Might be worth a shot to see if that's the issue.

If it does not help, then reset the CMOS.
By the way, how did you turn off the laptop through the shut down, or by hibernate?

If it boots with another cpu and doesn't boot with this, sounds that way. Don't suppose you have another system in which to test the suspect cpu?

Honestly I have a 2720 in my Racer and a 2920XM in my Alienware M18X and I think the Racer is a faster machine. Also the M18X is O/Ced to 4.0GHZ and the racer still seems quicker.

It would be nice if we could test the XM processor in another system. If that's not an option, you'll just need to initiate a return or exchange.

    1. Impossible, as far as gaming goes. Overall system speed? That is more HDD than either CPU or GPU.

    2. Zero relevance to the topic at hand.

Both machines have same video card, 3D mark 2k6 scores almost identical on both machines. Say what you like, I own both and thats my opinion. I dont think its a great upgrade. Money would be better spent on SSD or faster ram with tighter timings.

Agreed as far as real life performance. Beyond a certain point, most hardware isn't noticeable. A faster CPU beyond say, any modern quad core, won't make the slightest difference in Windows boot and application load times. An SSD will make a huge difference compared to 200Mhz more CPU speed.

Gaming will be the only place that a stronger CPU or GPU will be obvious, and more so the latter than the former. Very few games take advantage of the full capability of some of the higher end quad CPU's.
