I got this process in my Sager notebook - ITMservice.exe (SmartPinService) in the task manager, but this process is eating 550,000K of my memory! Is this usual? Is this a legitimate process or a malware?

In the Task Manager, this process is related to Turbo Memory from Intel.

    Any ideas guys?

There's not a lot of info about it - Turbo Memory is a valid system process, but ITMservice.exe doesn't show up on the Intel site, and few sites when Googled. 550mb is a lot of RAM, but not in today's systems. For example I run Navigator 9 as my primary browser (even though A$$hole AOL discontinued it) and it uses 260mb with 2 windows and maybe a dozen tabs open. I can get it to 500mb easy enough.

I'd either call or send an email to Intel and ask them about it. You can see how to check for the Turbo Memory on your system here:

How do I know that Intel® Turbo Memory is working?

Their contact info is here: Contact Intel USA

I have a 4.0 GB module of ITM and I noticed that about half the time I have the same process using about 500MB of RAM.

Make sure you are running the latest version, 1.9.0.1006. Updated on intel's site just a few days ago.

Only using 8MB on my system.

Aaaaaaah... This stupid piece of ... is really getting on my nerves!! Smartpinservice is eating 50% CPU (i.e. 100% of one core load) and consumes (at peak) 1GB of RAM... I've tried everything now: unisntalled it completely, installed the latest version 1.9.0.1006 (April 2009)... Erased all xml files... Nothing helps! After a few days of use or so, it randomly starts consuming the resources like crazy. I hate it! :) 'Good job', intel!

TM uses a lot of CPU and memory while it is caching everything. I let it do its thing, but set the priority to Low.

Oh... So, it's ok it is doing that?? I thought it cashed everything right away... I'll try to let it cash it through (shouldn't take more than a few hours, right?)and will see, hopefully it will stop driving me crazy :)

I don't think I've ever seen it run for more than a couple hours. It does it once a week or so. I wish I could set it to cache at night or when the computer is inactive. Poorly programmed application, but its supposed to be doing that.
