I'm going to ask when I call today if I can choose my HD brand. I'm going for a 7200RPM 320 Gig HD. If they say yes what brand should I ask for?

    Western Digital WD3200BEKT.

It's a faster than any Seagate.

Don't know for sure whether the Western Digital WD3200BEKT is any faster than Seagate? But comparing the Average Latency of the two, WD has 5.5ms and Seagate has 4.17ms. Although, WD has 5 years Warranty. It's reall up to you. :D

BTW. I had bad experiences with WD.

At this point we're talking minor real world differences in speed. Speed is an issue but I'm more concerned about heat issues and reliability.

Not much different on the overall speed between the two. I'm using the Seagate ST9320421AS for about a year now and the heat is not an issue. I don't know about the WD3200BEKT though.

Well it depend on what benchmark you look at. Especially at file copying the Seagates lag behind.

Don't go for raw speed. Go for longevity, mixed with speed. Go for a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB drive (7200 RPM). This drive is amazing. Runs quite cool for a fast drive.

The coolest (temp-wise) HDDs will be the newest Seagates, the 7200.4 line. No other HDD brand runs as cool in the 8662 chassis, this is fact.

Ok so quick update (will be posting more about my experiences in a coming post). I talked to Justin and I can make requests regarding brands but it depends on what they have available in stock. I did request the Seagate but asked for Western Digital as a backup.

I just got my 2098 in. I had my fingers crossed for the WD Scorpio Black series (I have put them in four laptops in the past couple months), but instead found myself with a Momentus 7200.3 drive. I have no complaints; it's zippy, and everything is loading quickly.

I used to be a benchmark nut (heck, I used to run a review site) but over time I ended up converting to how things feel being as important as obscure numbers in most cases. The WD Scorpio Black is a darned nice drive, but I have no complaints about the Seagate. If you can noticeably tell the difference without running benchmark programs than you're a better man than I.
