Let me start off by saying that I enjoy reading the comments by the people in this forum. So, I decided to present my quandry here and hope to get back some valuable input.

I'm a soldier who is currently deployed to Iraq. So, going to stores and shopping for a great computer is obviously out of the question at this time. I have been reading a lot about the sager/clevo computers as of late, and find that I am more and more anxious to lay my hands on one.

However, my problem lies in the fact that I am looking for a true DTR that has phenomenal gaming power as well as enhanced stability. I've looked at both the 570 and 900 series and can't decide which to choose. I suppose the 900 would be my choice but it looks like I can only get a desktop-grade processor in it, which in my opinion, is just asking for issues in a laptop.

So I put out these parmeters out to any and all who would like to provide some input into my final purchasing decision.

    -Laptop must:
Not be obsolete in 2-3 years
    Be a power-gamer
Provide stability - I've had boutique made desktops in the past that were just not very well put together by the guru.
Have moderately to good upgradable factor. (I rather spend 1000 dollars to upgrade a good computer, than spend another 3000 in a year.)

    Budget- 3,000 and under.

Once again, I appreciate in advance any help I can get. (BTW: I've heard about the good response time from Flawless. However, I placed a quick note to them on their contact us page, and haven't received anything from them in 2 days now. Perhaps, their system is down.)

The 570u is a powerful machine and utilizes a mobile chip. This machine would run cooler then the 900 series machines. There are many reviews done here on the 570u or Sager NP5760.

I have the D900K and I have used the M570U, definitely the M570U would be highly recommended over the D900K for a couple of main reasons:
    - sheer performance for the money (Core 2 Duo beats AMD X2/FX)
    - the weight (D900K is far too heavy)
    - the future (M570U is newer and has more future upgradeability)

Read some reviews for this notebook:

I got my notebook back in March 2006 because it was the only dual-core notebook available and the most powerful for gaming. Now its becoming obsolete, but I am still happy with it, it should still last me for 2-3 more years at least.

Is it a question of no mobo that will fit in the 900 series that will take a mobile duo core, or just price of the parts?

We have four or five alienwares issued as one of our many military systems and I find, I really like the body of the 900. I suppose we as the consumers have to pick with what they, the sellers offer. Such is life.

Oh and to make my obsolete requirement more feasible, I meant as in capable of still functioning at high levels with near-future software.

    Thanks for the current comments.

The D900 series comes in 2 flavors:
    - D900T has a socket 775 motherboard that support up to Intel Pentium 4/Extreme
    - D900K has a socket 939 motherboard that supports up to AMD Athlon X2/FX or Opteron

The D900T has recently become discontinued and the D900K is about to have the same fate. The D900K is the only D900 notebook that supports a dual-core CPU. No motherboard revisions available for Core 2 Duo's for the D900 series.

Read the Clevo Guide for further info about the models and the resellers (Alienware does not sell many Clevos anymore).

The D*** series is speculated to have replacement models very soon, but no timeline available or specifications. If a new D*** is going to get released, it would probably be ready for Core 2 Duo or the upcoming Santa Rosa.

    Only time will tell.
Until then the best 17" gaming notebook is still the M570U.
