so a few days ago I ordered one of these from a reseller (I won't name them) but I'd like to check some information I've just been told.

They've got a problem shown up in testing where using the thunderbolt port as a display device disables all other USB devices, trying to use the USB devices then disables the thunderbolt. They've tested it on multiple chassis with multiple display devices and it's supposedly affecting me and another customers order, the first 2 orders they've attempted to fulfill with this new chassis revision

They need to wait to hear back from clevo that this is a firmware/driver bug and will be resolved in the future, but that probably won't be for several days.

So the question for those resellers around here, is there a new hardware revision (although the model number hasn't been updated?) and anyone else found this issue in testing or are they spinning a particularly creative yarn?

Specifically it was the 1080 with 4K gsync screen version if that matters

The only effect that using the TB3 function via USB Type-C port si that it will disable the first mini DP port (this is also explained in the user manual). The first mini DP port is the one next to the HDMI port on the rear of the chassis. We don't have any other reports in our internal system that I can see regarding USB ports being disabled when the TB3 is used as a display device.

And you've not had any new hardware revisions or mention of them coming?

They mentioned it being a brand new 2017 model, although were unsure when I pointed out the model number has been around since last year.

The 2017 models updated the chipset but we have not had any reports of such behavior either.

Partly correct. In the BGA chassis the chipset moved from HM170 to HM175, also the P870 went from Z170 to Z270. But for your chassis (P775) and also P75* and P77* it's the same Z170 with a BIOS update for Kaby Lake support.
