I bought a SSD for my coming and both of them will be here Monday. I need to install windows 7 to SSD. I wonder how I can control which hard drive I will install the OS to. I am worried that the laptop will automatically install OS to the HDD since it is in the primary hard drive bay under the optical drive.

    Thanks!

i think the primary bay is the one with its own plate right?
also you should be able to select which partition to install W7 to during the installation process which you should pick the one that matches your SSD, i also think you have to change the boot order in bios but let someone more experienced than me give you better instructions :)

When you install Windows 7, it allows you to choose where you install the OS, so don't worry. I believe the first SATA port is the one located under the optical drive, so if there's already a disk in there, you'll need to swap them.

The secondary SATA port is also SATA3 I believe, so if you aren't that picky, you can just put the SSD in there and it should be just as fast and much less trouble. It doesn't sound like you have alot of experience with these sorts of things, so this might be the best option for you.

As mentioned, you'll need to make sure you change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the SSD.

You should be able to place the SSD into whichever bay you want to. Check in your BIOS though (tap F2 a few times on boot) and check your Boot order and make sure your laptop is set to recognize the other drives, ALL of them.

No real need to change boot order, just tap the F7 key and it will bring up the boot menu to select a boot device. Select your CD-ROM (depending on what you have, you didn't state if Blu-Ray or DVD but TSSTcorp, Slimtype DVD or BD or Mata are usually the common ones).

After you boot from the Windows OS disk, tap any key to boot from the CD/DVD. Once in the Windows setup, you will need to get to the point where it asks how you want to install the OS. Select the Custom (advanced) option and it should bring up your disk drives list. Be sure you don't have any partitions on any of the drives (bottom right, select the options, then select existing partitions and then click Delete below).

Select your SSD (generally smaller than your 500GB or 750GB I would assume unless you got one bigger than 256GB) and click "Next" install will then put it on the SSD. No worries from there as the computer will just look for the drive with the OS boot files and go from there.
