    Installing nvidia drivers by modding inf files

    Background Information:

    I personally own a Nvidia GTX 675m and was in a bad spot. Whenever I look for driver updates it tells me I have latest driver installed, but I know that this is not true, I can find more updated drivers available on nvidia’s site for my specific graphics card.

    So! In search of a solution I can across this. Which suggested I mod 2 specific inf files inside the driver installer itself. However, the steps provided are not entirely accurate and leave some assumptions. So I present those of you experiencing the same problem a step by step solution.​

    Step-by-Step Solution:

    1) Click start, type in “devmgmt.msc”, then hit [enter]. This will bring up Window’s Device Manager screen.

    2) Under the display adapters category, you should see your video card listed. Right-click your video card and then click properties.

    3) When the properties window for your graphics card appears, click on the Details tab. Select the “Hardware Ids” from the drop down menu.

    a. Mine is: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1212&SUBSYS_ 51021558. Your hardware id may be different, but should have a similar format.

    b. Remember the orange value! Paste it into a word value, write it down… whatever. We’ll need it later.

    4) If you do not have the latest driver, go to the nvidia website and download it for your specified device. Your download should be located at: %systemdrive%\NVIDIA\

    Open the folder of the driver you just downloaded. Open the “Display.Driver” folder. Open both the “nvcv” and the “nvdm” files. Note that they may have other characters on the end of them such as nvcvi, nvcvn or nvdmi, nvdmn.

    5) Inside of nvcv file, hit the [Ctrl]+[F] keys. Search the name of your graphics card.

    You should find a grouping of values, note these values may differ for you:

    NVIDIA_DEV.1212.0270.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.1212.0271.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.1212.5105.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.1212. 5101.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M "

    Change one of these values to match the value you copied down earlier. Note down which value it is you want to change.

    NVIDIA_DEV.1212. 5102.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M "

    Now that we changed one of these values, search the whole number that you changed. In the case above, the numbers we will be searching for is 1212.5101.1558. There were around 3 for me.

    They look like this:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.1212. 5101.1558% = Section024, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1212&SUBSYS_02701558

    Like before, you will change the red parts to match your number. So the above junk should look like this:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.1212. 5102.1558% = Section024, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1212&SUBSYS_ 51021558

    Do this until you can no longer find the any more of the original number to replace.

    6) Then repeat step 5, for the nvdm file. If you already did that process once for both files, then you are done!​

    Was googling about inf mods and found your guide! I will follow it and let you know if everything works fine.. Thanks for the effort and + rep :)
