Hi, I was thinking of upgrading my 901c

Has anyone tried to put in a Intel Xeon X3380 3,16GHz?

It runs at 95w, has socket 775 and should work.

I guess i just need a bios to support it. Does that exist?

    Thanks for any information.

x3380 is to expensive, a better proposition would be the x3370. Its half the price. .16 mhz lezz if my math is correct...

I don't believe Deodot asked about price.

A few users have are running Xeon CPUs in their D901C. So I know Xeon is possible; I'm sure another user has more information whether the X3380 is compatible.

Yes, and if i take the 9550 i can get it even cheaper for an additional .16mhz less :) :)

But since i'm upgrading i would like to have the best one possible. And the x3380 isn't that expensive. Just about the same as the Q9650 when it first came out..

well i'm still waiting for any info.. I seems unlikely that i'm the only one who's been thinking about this..

I was thinking about hits also. The truth is that the x3380 are so expensive and rare that I do not think anybody tested it. Not even the stores. I only know they have been using with success the slower x3370 and x3360 without problems. I personally would recommend the q9550s.

I just find it strange. x3380 might be rare, but not that expensive. Six months ago the q9650 had the same price.

And i've seen stores put in the QX9650 for a lot more (which is totally unnecessary)

It can never be fast enough :D. I would do the same if I could afford.

OP ask the store where you bought it they can tell you for sure.

Hey if you do go with the x3380, make sure you post your results.

Also I've seen buy.com has the xx3380 and x3370 the cheapest.

    [Re: Best processor for NP9262]

The above thread asked about the Xeon processor. The last post was 05-09-2009. No one chimed in at the time with any information regarding these processors.

As the Q9650 dropped to $319 [NewEgg], I decided to pull my E8600. It will be interesting to see if I will notice the difference in speed. The x3380 BTW is about $250 more, and untested in a D901C as far as I can tell. That's quite a gamble for a .5 multiplier addition...

Yes I agree, it's a gamble.. I'm trying to contact some resellers now. The only thing is the bios i guess. Otherwise it should be fine..

I don't think 250 is that much. I'm surprised so many are commenting on that here. Considering a lot of us are spending 4500 usd and more on our laptops!! :)

When/If i'm getting any clarification i'll post right away :)

Ah thank you. :) I've found it there now. Then it should work just fine.

Well, I swapped the E8600 for the Q9650 yesterday. I run XP [I will skip ME and Vista], and am currently playing Titan Quest, so of course the CPU isn't flexing any muscle. So it actually feels just a tad slower than the E8600. I ran WPrime just to have a result that looks really good and fast....

ME was before XP, so you have already skipped it ;)
