read a lot that says AMD is better for gaming. speculation is that Bulldozer is coming out in April.

is AMD better for gaming? if so, will it be an option in sager models?

opinions on AMD v Intel welcomed (keep it peaceful please :))

    Hmm..

Shouldn't it be nVidia vs. AMD?

Intel HD3000 vs. AMD is without a doubt AMD.... :D

To be honest, "The way its meant to be played" seems to show more FPS in more games than the AMD counterpart.

IDK, it's just my thoughts so hopefully no one will try to rip me to shreds..

He was referring to the CPUs, but again the single video card laptops will be GPU limited in games rather than CPU limited.

Ah, my bad.. not too much a fanboy for AMD CPU's..

I'll wait around and see what they have to offer..

So it won't make much of a difference for gaming? Guess it makes sense now that it's pointed out: single GPU will be the bottleneck before the SB CPU

Still curious as to what kinda performance AMD's latest will yield..

Generally the GPU will be the main component to worry about when it comes to gaming. As for the CPU's I used to be a staunch Intel supporter up until recently. I've actually become a fan of AMD after getting this beast of a 6 core desktop CPU (1055T) that OC's like crazy while being under volted, for less than 200$. Stock chip is 2.8Ghz, I have mine OC'ed to 3.5Ghz on each of the 6 cores while on the stock heat sink and having it under volted, (with a decent aftermarket cooler this chip hits 4.0Ghz+). I'm running this 24/7 for 5 months with 0 issues and thermals well under control.

From what I've heard, Bulldozer in design should actually be better for gaming this time around than Intel's current i7 architecture and AMD's K10's, due to the way it handles workloads.
Generally i7's were always stated as being better for gaming than AMD's offerings, although all my games run like hot butter on my 1055T and 5850, super smooth gaming experience. I think it would be great for consumers if Clevo incorporates AMD into it's next iteration of the X7200 as an alternative to Intel. I was disappointed that they didn't have it as an option on the current X7200 as it would have given those in the market for one a very cheap and similarly performing alternative to i7.

Clevo and Sager are all about performance. If AMD can come out with something faster than Intel (not per dollar, not per watt -- just plain faster), they have a pretty good chance of getting one of these huge laptops designed around it. Otherwise, I doubt it.

I'm not sure what AMD has coming, but I sure do hope it makes a comeback soon! I used to be a huge fanboy.

As for the awesome overclocking potential in AMDs, I think Intel caught on in recent years and allowed some similar situations. I got over 4ghz from a $100 i3 desktop CPU. Shame I never use that machine, aside from all the testing I originally did on it...

Bulldozer will be out for desktops this year but notebook APU based on Bulldozer cores won't be out until 2012.

Brazos and Llano are what we're looking at in notebooks from AMD this year and while they may be competitive in netbook and mainstream machines they probably won't challenge Intel in gaming notebooks.

Unfortunately Clevo also has a very close relationship with Nvidia, so it would take a lot of extra performance from AMD APU to get Clevo to lock out SLI or possibly even Nvidia GPU entirely.

what about phenom II 1090t in a DTR? it's possible and will run cooler than the hot- 980x, but yea, the performance isn't the same exactly, but still, why is this not an option?

It's not an option, because it would need a whole new motherboard/laptop designed for it - AMD CPU's use completely different architecture/chipsets/etc from intels ones. Also AMD CPU boards don't support SLI.

i know that, but it would indeed be an excellent price/performance buy if you want a good desktop processor at not so stupid prices.

Clevo doesn't really pay attention to "price/performance". And frankly, that CPU is simply not that good by any metric, particularly now that the fixed Sandy Bridge motherboards are becoming available again.

The Phenom II 1090t (which is what I assume ChronoBodi meant since this was what the discussion was about in the previous post).

Then you are very uneducated sir. Go do some research before making posts like your previous one. These CPU's perform very well.

At least this generation in the mobile space, AMD really has nothing to compete with the Sandy Bridge quads... If we stick desktop processors in these machines, then it might be more even but AMD's next gen laptop processors are months out at least...

AMD has not been in the lead of CPU technology since the Athlon 64/Pentium 4 era. AMD has nothing competitive to offer against Sandy Bridge.

Not talking about leads, we were discussing AMD as a cheaper/similarly performing option to the Nehalem's in the X7200 (with the exception of the 1000$ 980X of course). X6's should be compared more to Nehalem rather than SB. Bulldozer will be AMD's competition to SB.

They are adequate, but even compared to Lynnfield they lose in the vast majority of scenarios (you need something that uses all 6 cores for them to win). Compared to Sandy Bridge, they're slightly cheaper for less performance -- they lose by a lot in lightly threaded scenarios and even with 6 cores against 4, they still lose most of the time. And on top of that, they use 25% more power.

They have their place in the desktop market (mostly because of AMD's dedication to compatibility and low pricing), but with Clevo, this would work the other way around: they would need a new laptop. There's just no way they're going to do this for something so that doesn't have a performance edge.

You're downplaying the CPU's a bit too much my friend. It's when OC'ing that these CPU's shine. In some scenarios they can beat most Nehalems and in a couple scenarios even come somewhat close to a 980X. Check around for more benchmarks.

As for the laptop, Clevo would just need a new motherboard. It's that simple, and it would lower the overall cost due to the cheaper CPU's and cheaper chipset.

But it would only fit in a massive 18" chassis which is a very limited market to begin with... Also, even today most apps are not multi-threaded well enough to use 6 cores... I work on this stuff and getting multiple cores to perform equal work is almost impossible in any realistic scenario simply because no matter what your programming, your calls will take different lengths of time on the different threads (unless your doing the exact same thing on every thread on a loop...) Even then each core will perform slightly differently...

And then Intel will have Ivy Bridge coming in the near future. I just can't see how AMD can catch up to what Intelis providing in the mobile space.

Current-gen AMD CPUs would severely bottleneck even a GT 550M.

But of course it would only fit a 17"/18". We were only discussing the X6's in the X7200. They certainly wouldn't be going into a 15", no desktop CPU would. Maybe in Q1 of 2012 when AMD has the mobile variant of Bulldozer available for laptops, we will see more AMD chips in mainstream laptops.

As a mobile gamer, what AMD is doing in the desktop space interests me very little. I need them to compete on the high-end of the mobile space, to help us out with Intel's ridiculous pricing schemes.

AMD would need to come up with something ingenious and revolutionary if they want to catch up to Intel. Intel had huge success with the Core Duo, then used the cash to push research. Then came C2D, i7, SB, and AMD was left in the dust.
